LED is short for “light emitting diode”. By definition, it is a solid-state device that controls current without heated filaments like tungsten in the light bulbs we are used to using. LEDs are not bulbs or lamps in the true sense of the word and application. The LED lights are very reliable, bright and long lasting. LED lights require a lot of work to make them available to the consumer. The LED needs to be placed on a circuit board or other material that will allow electricity to pass through it at a specific voltage and current. They also require components operating them at specific voltages to produce different colors. The light wavelength created by the LED semiconductor is so precise that many hues of a single color can be produced. An endless rainbow of colors can be created with pure brilliant colors. To see just a few of the colors that can be produced please view our color changing Battery Operated Candles. What makes the LED lights virtually indestructible is that the entire LED unit is totally embedded in epoxy resin. There are no loose or moving parts within the solid epoxy enclosure of an LED light. How long will LED lights last? The LED lights that we as consumers will buy are rated for one thousand or more hours of run or burn time. The more expensive commercial LED lights called Cree and Luxeon LEDs are rated for fifty thousand hours of run time. This style of commercial LED light would be used in traffic lights to reduce the maintenance cost of changing burned our lights. The savings of electricity is another reason that many traffic lights are now being converted over to LED’s. How does a LED light work?
The positive electrical power is applied to one side of the LED semiconductor through a lead wire (1) and a whisker (2). The other side of the semiconductor is attached to the top of the anvil (5) that is the negative power lead (4). It is the chemical makeup of the LED semiconductor (6) that determines the color of the LED light. The resin lens (3) is designed to allow most of the light to escape from the semiconductor and it also protects the LED semiconductor from the elements. The resin lens can be clear or dyed in a verity of different translucent colors to create different effects. To see some of the different lens please select this link Battery Candles. An LED light source is very intense and could cause injury to your eyes. Make sure that you DO NOT look directly into the LED light source without certified dark protective eyewear.
