Choosing a Dog.
Dogs are cute cuddly and make great companions. Before you buy a dog make sure you choose the one that’s right for you, your lifestyle and your living space. Evaluate your lifestyle and family circumstances. Do you have small children? Are you active? What are your family hobbies and activities? Does anyone in your family have allergies? We carry Angelic Poodle Ornaments.
Make a list of the qualities you want or need in a dog. Do you need a lap dog, guard dog, small or toy size or can you and your home accommodate a large dog? Do you want a dog with long fur that sheds and needs special grooming? Look at this adorable Chihuahua Puppy Princess Ornament.
No dog is totally non allergic but some cause fewer allergies than others. Typically breeds that do not shed as much or that require frequent bathing are less allergic. Also, small dog breeds because they produce less saliva. Poodles and Poodle mixes are least allergic. This is the cutest Lil Scottie Princess Ornament.
Once you have completed your list, go to the library or the AKC web site and check out information on all the different breeds of dogs until you find one that fits your family.
Purchase your dog from a responsible, ethical breeder who produces high quality, healthy dogs with stable temperament. The AKC has breeder referral contacts for each recognized breed.
Dog Breeds.
There are many breeds of dogs and they mainly fit into these AKC acknowledged groups.
First are the Sporting Group. These dogs are active, alert, likeable and make well rounded companions. They do require regular invigorating exercise.
Second are Hounds. These dogs are mostly used for hunting because of their scenting powers and stamina. Beware though because instead of barking some hounds produce a deep baying sound. Look at these darling Dachshund Puppy Angel Ornaments.
Third are Working Dogs. They have mostly been bred to guard, pull sleds or rescue. They are quick to learn, intelligent, capable and make solid companions. Their size and strength can make them unsuitable for children. These dogs must be properly trained.
Fourth are Terriers. They are feisty, energetic and range in size from very small to medium sized. Most were bred to hunt. They can have wiry coats that require special grooming. They also require owners with determination to match their lively spirit. Look at our Uber Cute Schnauzer Puppies.
Fifth is the Toy Group. They are diminutive in size but very expressive. They are very popular for people with small living space. It is easier to control and care for smaller dogs, though they can have long coats that need special care.
Sixth is the Non Sporting Group. This is a diverse group of sturdy dogs with different personalities, sizes, coats and appearances.
Seventh is the Herding Group. This is the newest class and is composed of dogs that used to belong to the Working Group. They share the ability to control the movement of other animals. They are intelligent, make excellent companions and respond well to training. See these German Shepherd Puppy Angel Ornaments.

Artificial Christmas Trees.
The Xmas Trees Guide for Artificial Christmas Trees will help you understand the differences in Christmas trees. When purchasing Artificial Christmas Trees, keep in mind that most Xmas Trees will last around 15 years. So chose wisely.
Generally there are two major ways manufacturers attach the branches of the Xmas trees to the Artificial Christmas Trees pole or trunk;
The first way is the hook in branch construction where you put each branch into a bracket that is attached to the artificial christmas trees trunk pole. Usually these branches are color coded so you know which layer the branch is hooked into. If you lose the color coding tag, you can match up the branches by length. The longest branches go on the bottom bracket and the shortest branches are put on the top bracket. The hook in method for Artificial Christmas Trees are the cheapest to produce. The hook in branch style will take longer to set up and you will have to take off and put on the Christmas lights, Christmas after Christmas. You will have to determine if the time saved and additional mental stress is worth the savings in cost of the hook in branch construction.
The second and newest way is the hinged branch construction. The hinged branch process on Artificial Christmas Trees is the quickest and easiest to assemble of the two methods. Usually you will only have to put three trunk poles together. Since all the branches are permanently attached to the tree trunk pole with hinges, the branches just simply fold down into the correct position. Just like holding an umbrella upside down and letting it unfold. Now that is quick and easy! You're ready to shape the branches now. Select the following link to learn more about Artificial Christmas Tree Shaping Guide. Advantages of artificial christmas trees hinge construction is that it will allow anyone to put on the Christmas lights permanently so you do not have to light your x-mas tree, Christmas after Christmas. Select the following link for artificial christmas trees information and prices Artificial Prelit Christmas Trees.
Facts About Artificial Christmas Trees.
Make sure that you know what the Artificial Christmas Trees, stand is made of, plastic, metal, etc. If there will be children or pets around the Artificial Christmas Tree, you need to do a tip over test to see if the tree stand will hold a fully lit and decorated Artificial Christmas tree upright in case of an accident. Remember that fully lit and decorated Artificial Christmas Trees will be about twice as heavy. Plastic tree stands on larger trees are cheaper and have a tendency to bend or break under stress. Advantages of artificial christmas trees metal tree stands is that they are stronger and less likely tip over.
Some Artificial Christmas Trees needles are made of Poly Vinyl Chloride or PVC. The length and softness of the needles are different. Also notice the different colors of needles within the branch. If there are shorter brown needles they represent the wood or bark of the tree branch. Poly Vinyl Chloride is pressed into thin sheets then cut into fine needle like strands. These strands are twisted between two strands of wire to form the tree branches. Cheaper constructed Artificial Christmas Trees will just have the branch ends cut off square. A rounded or sculptured branch tip looks much nicer and more natural. The wire in the branch of the Artificial Christmas Trees are very important also. The wire should be strong enough to hold your heaviest ornaments. As usual, the cheaper the artificial christmas trees, the thinner the branch wire will be. New PE Artificial Christmas Trees.
The newest Xmas Trees on the market today are the PE trees. Poly Ethylene is used in an injected molding system to form a group of tree like branches and needles. These branch molds use real tree branches as forms thus the needles are molded into the correct shape. A wonderful time saving advantage is that they requires little or no shaping. There are countless colors and textures available to choose from with Poly Ethylene. Most Artificial Christmas Trees in the 60’s and 70’s with a wood pole or stick in branches, it could have been made with the same type of molding system that is being reintroduced into the market place today. The Poly Ethylene branch and needle trees produced today are fare superior to those trees made years ago. The Pre-lite Poly Ethylene trees are to date the simplest and quickest trees to set up. Just let the branches fold down and run your fingers through the Poly Ethylene branches to separate and fluff them a little. Discount trees use lower grades of Poly Ethylene and color dies to lower the price of their trees. These low grade Poly Ethylene products will break down much quicker thus losing there color faster than top of the line Poly Ethylene. Select the following link for Prelit Artificial Christmas Trees information.
Then there is the Artificial Christmas Trees "tip count". Yes, tip count is a useless tool to measure the quality of Artificial Christmas Trees. Discounters like to use the tip count because even the cheapest artificial christmas trees can have high tip counts and more is better in the eye of the uninformed consumer. What is important is that you cannot see through the aritficial Christmas trees and that the outer branches will allow your ornaments to hang freely on the tree. What You Need To Know When Buying Best Artificial Christmas Tree.
Purchasing a new Christmas tree should not be a spur of the moment decision, keep in mind your new tree should last about 15 years. When you invest in an tree it is wise to purchase a premium quality tree. In the long run the quality and appearance of your tree will out weigh any additional cost or savings. Make sure you store your tree in a storage bag to avoid damaging it during the summer months. Do not to store your x-mas tree in it’s original shipping box. The shipping box will usually be to small once your tree is shaped. Using a storage bag you will avoid having to totally reshape your tree next season. A common mistake is to go out with the intention of buying the tallest, widest Artificial Christmas Tree you can find, only to get home and find it doesn’t fit. The most important thing to consider is, where are you going to display your tree. Most home ceilings are 8 feet tall. A 7.5 foot Artificial Christmas Tree will allow you to put a tree topper on the top of most Artificial Christmas Trees. Select the following link to check out our beautiful Christmas tree toppers. If you have vaulted or custom ceilings you may want to consider a taller tree. It is a good idea to measure from floor to ceiling to find the best placement for your tree. You also need to consider the amount of floor space available in the spot where you want the tree to sit. Measure between the pieces of furniture and from the wall out into the room to determine how wide a tree you can purchase. Some of the Artificial Christmas Trees come in regular, slender, or slim widths. Also check the distance to the nearest electrical outlet as well. You will also need to check and make sure that there are available electrical outlets to plug in your lights. We carry the finest and most complete selection of Power Strips and Power Protection Supplies for your safety.
A tip to save money when Buying Best Artificial Christmas Trees.
To make your Artificial Christmas Tree taller a strong wood box placed under your tree stand will increase the height of the Xmas Trees. When Artificial Christmas Trees are made taller by the manufacturer, larger more costly bottom branches are added. Instead of paying for a ten foot tree you can save around $80 to $200 if you purchase a 9 foot tree. Then place the artificial Christmas tree on a one foot tall box. A tree skirt will hide the box. Select the following link to see our wonderful selection of Christmas tree skirt. Christmas Angels.
No figures in the Bible are as delightful as the Christmas angels. The heavenly angels are described as messengers of god. The word angels is Greek in origin and means messenger or one who is sent. Angels are supposed to be immortal spirits. Angels are said to live in Heaven and are thought to be intermediaries of God and our link to the mystical kingdom of heaven. Angel pictures are traditionally pictures that portray angels with human bodies and wings. Poets and artists have portrayed the angel with wings as symbols of innocence or virtue. They also symbolize purity, peace and love. The concept of angels with a human body and angel wings began in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament of Christianity. The New Testament says that they rejoice when people on earth are sorry for their sins. Christianity has developed the most elaborate doctrines about angels. Christianity recognizes an order of beings in which they rank above humans beings but under God. In the Bible nine ranks of angels have been counted. Seraphim angles and Cherubim angels are thought to be the highest order of angels. The Archangel is a chief angel or a leader among the angels. Saint Michael is known as an Archangel. Guardian angels or angel guardians represent a comforting presence for all of us. Click to see all of our Christmas Decorations Ideas.
Christian doctrine regarding angels reached full development during the A.D. 1100's and 1200's, especially in the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas. He believed that they were necessary to fill the gap between God and mankind. Aquinas taught that countless numbers of angels existed and that the they were immortal. Saint Thomas Aquinas believed angels knew everything except what depended on human choice and what was known only to God.
The heavenly angels play an important role in the Christmas celebration. It is said that they brought us news of peace through the coming of the Christ child, an angel gift from God for all people on earth. Gabriel is the heavenly angel of Christmas that brought this news to Mary. Gabriel revealed to Mary that she would have a son. An angel also visited Joseph. They told Joseph of the upcoming birth of the Christ child and also asked him not to be afraid to marry Mary. A story tells us that God gave a small group of tiny angels a special assignment to watch over this couple on their journey to Bethlehem. These angels were pretty new, and still learning ‘angel ways.’ But, the tiny angels took their jobs very seriously. Guiding the young couple over rugged terrain at the beginning of a cold winter, the angels did what they could to prepare the way. But even the tiny angels best efforts were of no avail when it came to finding shelter for the two in the crowded town. The tiny angels sang sweetly and used their collective efforts on behalf of Mary and Joseph but in the end, the couple was forced to occupy makeshift lodgings in the stable of a Bethlehem inn. As the night’s stillness settled over the land, an exciting moment came to pass inside the inn’s stable. The tiny Christmas angels assigned to care for Mary and Joseph flew closer to earth than ever before to observe the miracle of Christ's berth. The fastest angel of the group swept over the little stable, catching sight of the newborn child through the stable’s shabby, patched roof. And in an instant, the angels’ mission became clear: The little band of angels had been chosen by God to herald the birth! With great excitement and joy, the leading angel of the little band broke into a glorious song that flowed out into the cobalt heavens and wrapped around the clouds. It was a song of thanksgiving for all mankind to share. And their melody was heard to all the ends of the earth. Select here to view the Guardian Angel Figurines.
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem an angel of Christmas appeared to the shepherds telling them of the Christ Childs birth. Here is a story of two of the trumpeting angels that had always been the best of friends. The two angels were easily recognized, for one wore robes of sunset pink, the other dressed in sky blue. The friends were renowned for their sweet duets, played on pure silver trumpets for the glorification of the Lord and the enjoyment of all of the other angels. Honored for their musical ability, the trumpeting angels of Christmas were often asked to lead the orchestra with the first few notes of a song. At the beginning of a practice session, the orchestra leader Temira said, “Lift up your instruments, and lift up our hearts.” One day the orchestra members were called together to hear an exciting announcement. The Lord was preparing to send his Son to live among His people. A jubilee of music was planned for this monumental event. Every sweet, angelic voice would sing, every musical instrument would play. “Who can explain the importance of our newest assignment?” asked Temira. The trumpeting angel in pink stood and spoke. “The Lord has commanded that we appear to the shepherds in the hills of Bethlehem. These shepherds might fear the us. They have never seen even one of us before, much less a sky filled with angels.” Then the angel in blue continued, “We will fill the shepherds hearts with the joy of our music. Their fear will be replaced with love, and then we will tell the shepherds about the Savior." “Wonderful!” said Temira with a smile. Honored to be part of the jubilee, all of the orchestra members planned to practice their parts to perfection. They hurried away, discussing the duet that would start the concert. Finally, the evening came when the Lord’s Son was born, in a tiny stable in the city of Bethlehem. According to the plan, the angels of Christmas would appear first to the shepherds in the hills outside the little village. The entire host of musical angels stationed themselves in the dark night sky. On cue, the trumpeting angels lifted their instruments and played the first few notes of the world’s most glorious concert. As their music filled the sky, the shepherds looked up in amazement. Their hearts were filled with the awesome glory of God, thrilled and humbled to take part in the greatest adventure of all time. After they had told the shepherds of the good tidings of great joy, the angels were joined by a host of angels singing "Glory to god in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to men" and they praised God. Christmas Angels come in a multitude of Styles.
An angel in the form of a star warned the three kings to return directly to their homelands after seeing Jesus. After the visit of the wise men an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream suggesting that he take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt. When it was safe for the family to return, they would again appear.
Since the nativity, angels have been prominent in the art and music of Christmas. Graphically, angel pictures have also served in the popular and domestic arts. There is a special church festival for the archangel Michael. They have long been a symbol of Christmas in the form of Christmas ornaments, angel figurines, pictures, angel guardians jewelry, and Christmas angel gifts. Click here to see our Guardian Angel Figurines.
Angels have been portrayed in Christmas cards as angel pictures. They usually hover over the Christmas nativity stable. Angels have been the subject of Christmas music throughout the world. A few examples are;
-
Sing, choirs of angels.
-
Hark! the herald angels sing.
-
Angels we have heard on high.
-
Angels from the realms of glory.
-
Lord, with the angels we too would rejoice.
Medieval dramas centering on the Nativity made good use of angels. They are found in the classic and modern movies. Angels are usually portrayed as an intervener in the lives of the movie characters.
Christmas pageantry would not be nearly so colorful without angels. Countless girls and boys have been dressed in white angel robes to play the part of angels in the seasonal Christmas dramas. In Europe the angels are a part of the Star Boy groups, which go from door to door. Angels also accompany the gift bringer and they advises which children have been naughty or nice. According to the Irish legend the Virgin Mary sends angels each Christmas Eve to awaken children and they take them to heaven to sing a carol to the Christ Child. They then return the children to their beds and they are considered lucky for the rest of their lives. In Latin America and the Philippines angels accompanies street processions reenacting the journey to Bethlehem.
Today angels, like the heavenly angel figurines, are displayed in many homes. Angel ornaments adorn the Christmas trees and angel gifts are given to those we care about and love. Angel pictures can be seen hanging on the walls of homes through out the world. Gold and silver guardian angel jewelry is warn on clothing and lapel's. God has charged his angels with watching and safeguarding every one of his creatures. Kingdoms have their angels assigned to them, and along with man. Man is who religion designates the Holy Guardian Angels to. Jesus says in the Gospel, "Beware lest ye scandalize any of these little ones, for their angels in heaven see the face of my father." The existence of angel guardians that watch over humans is an established belief of the Christian faith. The wearing of a angel guardian is a custom that reminds us all that an angel is watching and safeguarding us. Click here to see our selection of Unique Angel Gifts.
Angels are wise in God’s ways and gentle in their speech and actions. They burst upon events with a joy and understanding of man that brings us closer to God every day. Perhaps this happens because only they are given special tasks by God that require the angels to associate with men and women on earth. Guardian angels bring a touch of the divine to all those hearing their messages and they are given responsibility for making all of the world’s greatest announcements.

Christmas Decorations:
Christmas decorating in America has evolved over the years. We have taken many different traditions from various countries and made them our own. The way we decorate our trees, string lights, and celebrate Christmas in general have become almost an art form in America.
Christmas Tree Lights:
For instance, candles used to be used as Christmas lights on Christmas trees. Buckets of water were often placed by the tree in case of fire. Using real candles for decorating became a real fire hazard. The invention of the electric light changed the way we decorated. Soon strings of lights replaced candles. Today, however, Battery Operated Lights and candles have become popular. They tend to be a bit more expensive, but as time goes on, the prices will drop. They are also much more safe to use than real candles. You can string them in your tree or use the battery candle sticks. Many churches now use Flameless Candles in their church services because of the ease of using them. There is no fire hazard and they are easy to store.
Christmas Ornaments:
Americans have a tradition of passing ornaments down through generations. It brings back fond childhood memories every year when they start decorating the tree. Every year a new ornament may be bought and added to the collection. Often when a couple is married, they start their own ornament collection. People give wedding ornaments, baby ornaments, and other various ornaments to new families. Decorating the tree is often the highlight of the season because the Christmas tree has become the center of many American homes Christmas display. Many families go and choose a tree together or put up their artificial tree. They have family time and decorate the tree together. Many memories are made and shared when putting up the Christmas tree.
Artificial Christmas Wreaths and Garlands:
Another tradition is garlands and wreaths. In the early days, live holly and ivy were used as decoration. Popcorn and cranberries were often strung together. Today though, many Americans use artificial wreaths and garland for their decoration. The artificial variety is a much more popular choice because it can be cheaper and used for many years to come. Artificial garlands can be put almost anywhere from stair banisters to outside light poles. Often wreaths are placed on doors as a welcoming sign.
Outdoor Christmas Decorations:
Decorating the outside of one’s house has become a huge tradition in America. From lights, to Nativity Scenes, to animated snowmen, the choices are endless. Many Americans put up Christmas lights around their house, trees and walkways. An outdoor Nativity Set is a popular choice for American display. Others choose snowmen or nutcrackers for decoration. Some neighborhoods have competitions for the best decorated yards. Please select this page to view our Christmas Decorations Ideas.

Christmas Garland History.
The Christmas garlands tradition in America was brought from Europe by the early settlers. Ropes of garland were usually made after the fall harvest. Making and selling Christmas greens brought enough income to furnish many suits of Sunday clothes and a new bonnet when there was little else to do after harvest. Staples, like pine, spruce, and cedar trees that were used could be found in the nearby woods. Greens were gathered by day and in the evening the greens were twisted into garlands around the fireplace. Usually someone could complete twenty to forty yards in an evening.
In the 1800’s wagons and boats filled with aromatic Christmas greens announced the beginning of the Christmas season. Select the following link to see our Mistletoe, Christmas greenery, Christmas Picks. Boxwood, hemlock, mountain laurel, holly, cedar blue berries, myrtle, and princess pine were used as highlights for the Christmas ropes. Other materials used to decorate were corn husks, dried grasses, the orange and scarlet pods of bittersweet, moss, dried fruits, and the red berries of black alder. Select the following link for information on Holiday Wreaths & Decorative Christmas Wreaths. Churches, business, hospitals, and florist purchased the majority of the woven decorated greens and other Christmas decor. The abundance and price range of the Christmas greens allowed everyone to participate in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas event as we do today with Christmas shopping.
In the early 1900’s natural Christmas foliage and Christmas greens became less abundant in the countryside. With the introduction of plastic artificial Christmas foliages and Christmas greens we could now make Christmas decorations without endangering nature. Plastic holly and evergreen were the most realistic of these early reproductions. With the introduction of silk (polyvinyl) flowers and greenery the quality and realistic looking reproductions of Christmas decor was greatly enhanced. Select the following link to view our Decorated Country Holiday Garland. In 1963 the first polyvinyl or PVC artificial Christmas trees, picks and greens hit the market. Christmas Poinsettia Flower History.
The Mexican poinsettia, known as the Christmas flower in North America, is used in most Christmas decorations, due to its red color and because the Christmas poinsettia blooms mainly in December. Native to Mexico, it is called Flower of the Holy Night there. The Mexican poinsettias are commonly bright red and now the Mexican poinsettia comes in pink, white, and other colors. The bright petals of the Mexican poinsettia, which look like flowers, are actually the upper leaves of the plant, called bracts. Some say these star-shaped bracts symbolize the Star of Bethlehem. These beautiful Christmas poinsettia flowers, which have become a symbol of Christmas, are used to decorate festive holiday decor for the Christmas holidays. Check out all of our Christmas Decorations Ideas.
Outside of the Mexican territory this beautiful red leafed Christmas flower that is used to decorate for Christmas is known as the Poinsettia named after the former US ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Joel R. Poinsett who became the first United States ambassador to Mexico in 1825. Dr. Poinsett of Charleston, South Carolina introduced the poinsettia to the United States when he returned home in 1835 from his ambassadorship. History has said that Dr. Poinsett liked the flower so much that he dedicated the last years of his life to making the “poinsettia”, the symbol for Christmas, throughout the rest of the world. Today the Christmas poinsettia is the most popular Christmas flower for Christmas decorating in the United States. The poinsettia is also a popular household plant often used through out the Christmas holidays. Other common names for the poinsettia include the Christmas flower, lobster flower, and Mexican flame leaf. Even though the poinsettia is a beautiful holiday flower you should be aware that the poinsettia’s hollow stem contains a milky sap that can irritate the skin and eyes and the poinsettia stems should be handled with caution.

Decorative Christmas Wreaths and Holiday Wreaths.
The English word wreath comes from the old English word, writhen, meaning to writhe or to twist. Holiday wreaths have long been made by twisting or bending evergreen branches into a circular shape. The ancient Greeks, and Romans, used evergreen leaves and garlands to make headdresses that were awarded as prizes to Olympic athletes, military hero’s, kings and others. Athletes received wreaths of Laurel, military hero’s received wreaths made from olive branches. Members of the aristocracy began adding jewels and precious metals to these headdresses, creating what became the Crown. The word crown comes from the Latin word corona which means wreath or garland. The bible associates wreaths with joy, triumph and honor. In Christianity the holiday wreath represents the circle, and likewise is given as a symbol of eternity. When made of evergreen leaves and branches the wreaths symbolize everlasting life with the green color symbolizing hope and new life. It was somewhere during the 15th century that the wreath began to be used as a hanging decoration. Select this link to see our line of Artifical Christmas Wreaths and Pre-lit Christmas Wreaths. Some believed that hanging a wreath was a sign of victory, be it political, personal or religious.
The History of Christmas Wreaths.
Evergreen plants, such as holly, ivy and pine, which stay green all year, have long been used to create holiday wreaths. Such greens as holly, ivy, and mistletoe have special meaning since they not only stay green, they bear fruit during the harsh winter months. Anciently people symbolized these plants to represent the promise of new or everlasting life. The people of northern Europe and the Romans decorated their homes with evergreen boughs during their winter festivals. Select this link to see our Christmas Wreaths, Garlands, Christmas Greenery and Christmas Ribbon. Sprigs of holly would also be exchanged as tokens of good will for the coming new year. The early Greeks and Romans brought green boughs indoors as a living reminder of nature's vitality. The Victorian era brought an appreciation for lavish arrangements from greens such as ivy, hemlock, yew, laurel, and bay. Select this link to see our Battery Operated Lights.
A nineteenth century an American custom was to use greens and boughs for wreaths as memorials, honoring the dead at Christmas. The boughs would be woven into wreaths, Christmas stars, and crosses for graves. Later, the boughs would be removed from the cemeteries by family members and brought home, where they continued to symbolize the season as holiday decor.
In the early 1900’s natural Christmas foliage and greens had become less abundant in the countryside. With the introduction of plastic artificial Christmas foliages, Unique Christmas Ribbon and greens we could now make artificial Christmas decorations without endangering nature. Holiday Wreaths.
Advent wreaths originated as folk traditions of the people of northern Europe. In the deep of winter candles were lit on circular shaped bundles of evergreen. Both the evergreen and the circular shape symbolized everlasting life. The candle light gave the people comfort at that darkest time of the year, as they looked forward to the warm days of spring. Traditionally an advent wreath consists of four candles, three purple and one rose colored. The three purple candles symbolize hope, peace and love. They were lit on the first, second, and fourth Sundays of Advent. The rose candle, symbolizes joy and was lit on the third Sunday. By the sixteenth century advent wreaths were being made much as we know them today. Check out our wonderful Christmas Decorations Ideas Web Site.
Christmas wreaths are a friendly welcome to all.
Traditional Christmas wreaths are a symbol of faith. Since wreaths are a circle with no beginning or end, they symbolize God's eternity and mercy during the Christmas season. When Christmas Wreaths are decorated with evergreen leaves and branches they symbolize everlasting life and God's everlasting love. Their green color is a representation of hope and new life.

Beginning Christmas Lights.
The early Christmas trees were lighted with candles, then glass covers with candles inside or metal lanterns with small wicks hung on the Christmas tree branches like ornaments. The early Christmas candles were a fire hazard and buckets of water were usually kept nearby the Christmas tree. Select the following link to view our safe Battery Candles.
With the invention of the electric Holiday Lights tree lighting became much safer. The electric Christmas Lights were one of America's unique contributions to the Christmas holidays that followed the invention of the incandescent electric light bulbs with a carbonized filament in 1879. The next development was the tungsten filament light bulbs. Early Christmas tree lights were simply night-lights strung together to make the light strings. Tungsten which produces the light gives a whiter light and for the same amount of electricity they give out almost three times as much light as the early carbon electric lights would have. The next improvement was the coiling of the tungsten which gave more filament in the same space of the bulbs thus more light. It was found that by using nitrogen-argon inside the bulbs would extend the life of the lights and make the lights more efficient. The nitron-argon filled tungsten bulbs are over twice as efficient as the ordinary tungsten bulbs which has its filament in a vacuum. When general electric commercially introduced the Holiday Lights, they caught on immediately. Edison electric soon followed with an electric Christmas lamp. History of Holiday Lights on Christmas Trees.

What Is An LED Light?
The newest light on the Christmas scene is the LED (light-emitting diode) lights. The cost of the light is more but the energy savings makes the LED lights the most economical light to date. An LED light is actually a semiconductor device that emits a narrow-spectrum of light when electrically flows through it. The color of the emitted light depends on the composition and condition of the semi conducting material used and the wavelength of the light emitted produces its color. Producing a true white light has bee the most difficult to produce. LED lights are usually constantly illuminated when a current passes through them, but flashing LED bulbs are also available. Flashing LED bulbs resemble standard LED bulbs but they contain a small micro chip inside that causes the bulb to flash or flicker like Battery Candles.
Today new and safer ways to decorate are being developed. One of the newest is the flameless LED battery candles. The new battery operated candles will give any home a safe candle like feeling. These LED candles can also be used safely where there are no electrical outlets. The new battery operated candles will never melt away, never burn down and never need replacing. You can enjoy candles for years without ever having to replace them. You can be safe and have peace of mind with using these flameless candles. These flameless candles are perfect for party tables, wedding tables, and group ceremonies. At night there is nothing like candles lighting up the night. You can also use the taper candle sticks for holiday church services, caroling, school activities, festivals, holiday arrangements or for countless other candle uses. Select the following link to view our safe Battery Operated Candles.
How Christmas Lights Work.
Most of the Holiday Lights today use the parallel Christmas light wiring system. Parallel Christmas wiring provides more than one path of electricity for each light bulb to follow. After the current leaves the light bulb it follows two or more paths before returning to the electrical source. The parallel lights have two wires and each light bulb has its own positive and negative wire connection so if one light bulb burns out the rest of the lights remain lighted. To reduce the risk of overheating your lights, replace any burned out light bulbs promptly using the same wattage replacement bulbs. The voltage of the lights does not change when another set of lights are added. What does change when adding additional sets of holiday lights is the amount of current that passes through the light bulbs. To much current flowing through the light bulbs will cause excess heat and blow out the bulbs. Most Holiday Lights today have fuses to limit the amount of current that will pass through the lights. Select the following link to read additional safety instructions for Safety and Care Instructions for Christmas Lights.
Use this guide to tell the difference between lights bulb styles. Lights that lets light pass through them with little resistance are called transparent lights. If the bulbs scatter the light, like frosted glass, the lights are called translucent lights. If the bulb does not let light pass through the them the lights are called opaque lights.

Decorating with Holiday Ornaments began in 1500's.
The definition of Christmas tree ornaments comes to us from the route word ornament which is defined as an accessory used to beautify, enrich, or improve the appearance or general effect of an object. To decorate a tree with a Christmas ornament is an adornment or embellishment. They are ornamental by nature and lend beauty or attractiveness to the Christmas trees.
German families adopted the custom of decorating a wooden pyramid with greenery and other objects in place of the Paradise tree. In Bavaria, Paradise was the term used for the Christmas tree for ornaments. In Latvia around 1510 a fir tree was decorated with roses which was associated with the Virgin Mary. In 1605 a tree in Strasbourg was brought in doors and decorated with paper roses, wafers, nuts, lighted candles, and sweets on trees. Later decorations included painted eggshells, cookies, and candies. Select here to view our Gingerbread Ornaments.
Until the mid 1800’s trees were decorated with edibles such as cookies, chains of popcorn, raisins, nuts, and pretzels. The tops of trees held flags, angels or stars. By the 19th century toys, bells, garlands and paper decorations were being included as decorations.
Germany provided the world with the bulk of its ornament production. Nuremberg in Bavaria produced metal decorations for export. Unique ornaments such as butterflies, stars, miniature musical instruments and icicles of silver foil were produced. Dresden and Leipzig Germany produced embossed paper or cardboard decorations known as Dresdens and angel hair. From the Thuringian mountains and Lauscha in Eastern Germany the creation of delicate blown glass ornaments began. Today decorating is easy with Christmas Ornament Sets.
German Natives Develop A New Form Of Glass Blowing.
During the Dark Ages, German natives in northern Bohemia developed a new form of blown glass in the 4,000 year history of glass. They learned the glass blowing skills from wandering Venetian traders, and created glass decorations to adorn the Tannenbaum (fir tree) for the winter solstice festival. Early Christians adapted this custom to celebrate the birth of Christ, and the Christmas tree ornament was born.
The invention of the blowpipe by some unknown artisan helped bring about the craft of blown glass. Glass blowing in Germany dates as far back as the 1500’s. The craft began as a cottage industry in Lauscha East Germany and it spread through most of the German country side. Beginning in the 1860’s Germany would change the world when glass blowing expanded to include delicate ornaments made from glass molds.
For many years, Germany was the major world source for glass ornaments. In the United States the German settlers in Pennsylvania decorated trees as early as the 1800's. During the mid-1800's the custom of trimming the tree spread rapidly through the world. Select here to view our German Glass Ornaments.
The work and living situation of the Thuringian glass blowers and the distribution remained almost unchanged from the middle of the 19th century through World War ll. After World War II many of the families moved from Bohemia to Rosenheim, Bavaria, Germany, to continue the hand blown glass tradition. During the post war years the craft families built a cottage industry and built a reputation for fine traditional glass. The cottage industries developed many different glaze colors, styles and shapes during this period. West Germany, Neustadt became recognized as the production center of the toy and ornament industry. Neustadt also became a refuge for glass blowers fleeing from Lauscha in Eastern Germany after World War II.
The German glass ornaments became popular and these keepsakes are still being made as today. Select here to view our Old World Santa Father Christmas Ornaments.
Pickle Ornaments Start The Christmas Presents Opening.
The glass pickle ornaments are the oddest German ornaments of all. For those who know the pickle story and for those who participate in hanging the pickle, it has become a welcomed addition to the present unwrapping dilemma of who is first. The glass pickle ornament is always the last one to be hung on the tree. The parents would carefully hide the pickle in the tree among the other decorations. When the children were allowed to view the Christmas tree decorated, they would begin gleefully searching the tree for the Pickle ornament. The children knew that whoever found the pickle first would receive an extra little gift and would begin the unwrapping of the Christmas gifts. The German Glass Pickle Ornament as well as other German glass ornaments have become keepsakes that will be handed down to future generations.
The First World War and the disruption of normal commerce ended the dominance of the German industry. British and American companies began making decorations and began to produce cheaper alternatives with new technologies. In 1939 Corning showed that mass production of glass ornaments was possible. New techniques enabled manufactures to produce figures like Santa Claus, nursery rhyme characters, flowers and other specialized decorations. With the invention of plastic in the mid 1900's new molds were developed and a new medium was created for Christmas tree decorations. The introduction of plastic would become the single most advancement in production since the early glass blowing era. Select here to view our Red and White Candy Ornaments.
Plastics Become A New Medium.
Creativity increased in the late 1900’s with the introduction of injection plastic molding. The boundaries of injection molding gave the Christmas industry a new medium to make an endless variety of unique ornaments. Tiny miniatures could be made. Oour Miscellaneous Holiday Ornaments include characters depicting all walks of life, cartoon characters, Christmas angels, and an endless array of characters which are produced with injection molding.
Snowflakes, stars and crosses are also popular decorations made with the injection molding process. The cost of injection molding is relative low allowing shoppers to buy a greater number of decorations with their budgets. Another advantage of the injection molding process is that the molds can be created in a short period of time and production of new items can start within months.
In the late 1900's as Holiday buyers seized on one fad after another and the quick production time of injection molding was put to use. Today injection molding uses new plastic textures with more flexibility and color variations that add quality and durability. No other medium to date has had such an impact on the variety, style, cost, and quality as the injection molding process. Other materials being used today are glass, metal, clay, wood, ceramics and paper. Holiday shoppers have the best selection to chose from than in the past and as technology improves, the selection will become even greater in the future. Christmas ornaments decorations have really come a long way from their beginning. In the early 1800s, before ornaments were main stream, people would adorn their trees with fruits, paper streamers, small decorated presents, lace and pieces of metal. Even before Christmas balls and tassels, people still used these tools to create a beautiful display in celebration of the joyful holiday season.
As the popularity of decorations began to gain ground and spread all over the world, demand grew for more sophisticated ornaments. New ideas were inspired, and in the mid 1800’s, the Germans began to create some incredibly beautiful glass blown ornaments. This grew out of already successful glass industries in Germany.
Parts of Germany were already making glass medicine bottles and glass eyes for dolls and window panes, so the transition for the up and coming demand for ornaments was not that difficult. German glassblowers soon became experts in designing hand-made, ornaments in the form of figurines and decorative shapes. These early Christmas decorations were very popular and held the market for quite some time.
Then, during the late 1800’s, F.W. Woolworth, who was one the America’s first mass merchandisers, saw that glass ornaments were in high demand and began to import them from Germany. He then began to sell them in his Five and Dime stores. During this time in American history, it is estimated that he was selling nearly $25 million dollars worth of glass Christmas ornaments decorations by the year 1890.
By the turn of the twentieth century most American and European countries were celebrating Christmas much the way we currently do. People bought gifts for children, family, and friends, along with decorating their trees and homes. The focus of decorating was beginning to catch on, and the Christmas season was widely celebrated outward displays of cheer.
Christmas ornaments decorations were the ideal way for people to share their joy for the holiday season. Once the handmade glass ornaments started to take shape, the invention of mass production was implemented. Christmas ornaments decorations were being made in large quantities out of glass, but they were then hand painted and decorated. This saved a great deal of time, and it allowed for a much larger production output.
As time marched on, trends began to take shape. As the baby boomer generation came of age, there was quite a trend in commemorative ornaments. Limited edition pieces, even the invention of plastic, opened the doors wide open—allowing more intricate details on pieces. Now, you can find Christmas ornaments decorations in almost any shape and color. In more recent years, personalized ornaments have really become popular because they allow you to really tune in on a person’s hobbies or milestones.
Not only are ornaments made to be decorations on your christmas tree, but you can even find them with microchips that will play music, adding a beautiful aspect to your tree display. Recently, smoke detector ornaments have been used on trees to signal you if there happens to be a fire on your tree.
As technology continues to advance, it is only a matter of time before we see all sorts of new little ideas that make our Christmas trees even more attractive.

Santa Claus Christmas.
The Christmas celebration today of gift giving from Santa Claus has its roots in Europe when St Nicholas gave gifts to the needy. St. Nicholas was born in 280 A.D.in Lycia, Asia Minor. His wealthy parents raised him as a Christian. Nicholas was just a child when his parents died from an epidemic that swept through Europe. Following the teachings of Jesus, Nicholas gave away his family inheritance to assist the sick, the needy, and the suffering. Nicholas distributed his presents late at night to conceal his identity. Nicholas became the bishop of Myra and was awarded the title of Saint for his good gift giving deeds.
Santa Claus, as we know him in America, has evolved from the gift giving European version of St. Nicholas. The traditional American Santa Claus outfit is much different than the European Santa’s. The American Santa’s red suit and white fur was created by the Coca Cola Company when they developed an advertising campaign for Coca Cola. The jolly old man in a red suite trimmed in white fur stuck with the American public and has become our traditional Santa Claus. Learn About German Ornaments History.
Even before man learned the secret of Christmas glass ornament making, nature made glass in two different ways. When lightning strikes sand, the heat sometimes fuses the sand into long, slender glass tubes called fulgurites, which are commonly called petrified lightning. The terrific heat of a volcanic eruption can also sometimes fuse the rocks and sands into a glass called obsidian. Most countries of the world have glass industries. For many years, Germany was the major world source for optical glass, laboratory glassware, Christmas glass ornaments and blown glass ornaments. The invention of the blowpipe by some unknown artisan helped bring about the craft of glass ornament blowing into the fine art of Christmas glass ornaments we know today. Glass blowing in Germany dates as far back as the 1500’s. Christmas German glass ornaments blowing began as a cottage industry in Lauscha East Germany and spread through most of the German country side. Items originally produced were not Christmas ornaments but practical items used mostly in the home. Beginning in the 1860’s Christmas in Germany would change the world when glass blowing expanded to include delicate ornaments for Christmas trees.
The work and living situation of the Thuringian glass blowers and the distribution of the German ornaments remained almost unchanged from the middle of the 19th century through World War ll. After World War ll, in West Germany, Neustadt became recognized as the production center for toys blown glass ornaments. Neustadt also became a refuge for glass blowers fleeing from Lauscha in Eastern Germany. Select this link to view our Christmas Figurines.
The Muller-Blech family practiced the craft of ornament blowing in the same workshops in Lauscha for thirteen generations. When the Russian occupation of Germany began in 1953, Heinz Muller-Blech took his family and left the homeland. They settled in Neustadt, a territory occupied by Americans, and reestablished what is now the modern day inge-glas workshops. Some other members of the family stayed behind in Lauscha. Many of the molds, used to form the delicate blown glass Christmas ornaments, remained in Lauscha with the Muller-Blech family and other families from the region. Members of the Muller-Blech family went about collecting all the molds they could find. The Russians destroyed all of the old world family molds that had been passed down for generations among all the families in Lauscha and had other molds created that were of a more political in nature, some with the Swastika. Some of the old molds were found in garbage piles, other molds were bartered for. Select this link to view Christmas Ornament Sets.
The Muller-Blech family had some connections that made it easier for people to get electricity faster in East Germany. They would also perform other types of work or even offer money in exchange for the old molds. The molds were in two pieces, so, to ensure that the entire mold would get across the border Klaus Muller-Blech’s grandmother would send them to him in a box of about a dozen or so, but only one half of each mold. She would put a note with the package, “Little Klaus, here are some molds for you to play with in the sand.” By sending the molds this way the border guards would think that the molds were of no importance. Later she would send the other half of the mold in a similar manner. The border guards would have destroyed the molds if they would have known the molds were going across the border to be used to continue the German Christmas ornaments craft of blowing delicate glass ornaments. For many years the old original recipe used to making the molds was lost. Recently the recipe to make the original molds used for making the old world Christmas glass ornaments was found, making inge glas the only company able to exactly reproduce the old molds, which makes their glas inge ornaments more valuable. The pickle German Ornaments Start The Christmas Presents Opening.
Many unusual glass Christmas ornament traditions and stories have evolved from the German families. The Germany tradition of hanging a Christmas glass ornament pickle on the Christmas tree is the oddest German Christmas ornament story. For those who know the pickle story, and participate in hanging the pickle ornament on the Christmas tree, the German tradition has become a welcome addition to the Christmas present unwrapping dilemma of who is first to open a Christmas package. The pickle ornament is always the last ornament to be hung on the Christmas tree, with the parents hiding the pickle glass ornament in the Christmas tree among all the other ornaments. When the children are allowed to view the Christmas tree they would begin gleefully searching for the German Christmas glass ornament pickle. The children knew that whoever found the pickle ornament first would receive an extra little gift and would be the one to begin the unwrapping of the Christmas gifts. Christmas in Germany has become synonymous with the Inge German Christmas glass ornaments. The Inge-glas glass ornament company is a combination of two German glass blowing families. One of the German ornament makers is the Muller family who dates their German Christmas ornaments back to the 1500’s. The other ornament maker is the Eichhorn’s family who dates their German ornament blowing back nearly as many years. Each generation took care to share their expertise with the next generation of glass blowers to follow. In the 1960’s young Klaus Muller-Blech, a 14th generation descendant, and Birgit Eichhorn Jeremias-Sohn spent countless hours in the German workshops of their grandparents and parents in Neustadt, Germany. The ornaments makers learned various aspects of the profession. Both grew to love the German vocation and realized that creating glass ornaments was undeniably ingrained in their spirit. The two glass ornament blowers continued to work in the profession of their forefathers into adulthood. Select this link to view our Glass Ornaments.
In 1992, a convention of antique Christmas glass ornament collectors was held in Reading, Pennsylvania. Another Germany tradition was about to start when Klaus and Birgit, who had not yet met, separately made arrangements to attend the convention in order to search for the German ornaments of their families’ past. Imagine the two traveling over 3000 miles from the small town of Neustadt to finally meet each other for the first time in the United States! The two fell in love and were married. Christmas in Germany would never be the same for the two families.
Germany would have a new glass ornament company that would be created by two of the oldest German ornament makers. The German families joined forces and combined their tradition and skills at the Inge-glas workshops. Together their collection includes more than 6000 antique blown glass ornaments molds dating from the 1850’s. In addition, new ornaments are created each year to represent the traditions of today.
Inge’s glass Christmas ornaments heirlooms, named for Klaus Muller-Blech’s mother represents much more than a collection of ornaments. The German company is still a family operated business and has became synonymous with German glass ornaments. To find out if you own any original Inge-glas ornaments, look for the authentic star crown ornament holder. This star crown is the Inge-glas trademark. The Inge-glas ornaments are recognizable as one of the oldest generational German Christmas ornament makers. Select this link to view our Blown Glass Birds. The old world Christmas company marketed the Inge-glass ornaments in the United States until the year 2000. The old world Christmas ornaments marketing literature using the old world Christmas name and the Inge star crown ornament holder will become a collector item in years to come.
In the year 2000 Inge-glas took over the old world Christmas ornament marketing and since then, Inge-glas has established their own distribution site in the United States. Just like the German ornaments, which was passed down by their parents and grandparents, Inge’s heirloom ornaments will be carried on for generations to come bringing joy to the world.
Packing Your German Ornaments For Glass Ornament Storage.
To care for and protect your Glas Inge blown glass ornaments for years to come, please be mindful of the following ornament storage suggestions. For ornament storage always wrap your ornaments individually in acid free tissue paper and pack your ornaments securely in a sturdy shallow ornament storage box, making sure not to place too many layers of ornaments on top of each other. One layer of ornaments is ideal. The Glas Inge ornaments should have a ornament storage box made of very sturdy paper cardboard. Plastic bubble wrap or plastic ornament storage containers do not allow the ornaments to have proper ventilation. Particularly if the ornaments are stored in a warm place like an attic or in a humid place like a basement. Also be sure to take care to store your ornament box in a safe, dry place away from water, sun light, fluorescent lights and outside elements. To see our ornament storage boxes. | | | Holiday Decor ( 5 )
Holiday décor usually consists of items we’ve accumulated over the years, things that we may hold dear or have some type of sentimental attachment because they remind us of someone or sometime special in our life. And even if you have a large amount of holiday decorations stored up, you can always find room for just a few more.
Since trends for the holidays change from year to year it’s nice to add to your decorations even if they are some small items. You may not realize how long you actually have had some of your holiday decor and there is no better time to jazz up your motif with the newest trendy items on the market. Here is a great example; a few years back icicle lights were all the rage and everyone was using them on the exterior part of their homes. Everywhere you looked while driving through neighborhoods were home after home of the same old icicle light motif. Well since that faze seems to have passed you will still see a few houses with icicle lighting but for the most part people have reverted back to the traditional strand lighting but the colors have changed with the trends. You can now find red, blue, purple and green light strands, just to name a few. Now the trick is when you do decide on your color or theme of lights you should try to stay with just one color; you don’t want to mix too many colors unless you are doing multi-colored strands. There might be a few exceptions to this rule since I like to decorate my outdoor wreaths with a different color to stand out. I use green lights on my outdoor wreaths over my garage façade lights so they stand out between all of my other decorations.
Your holiday décor should start coming out on display during the holiday months, some people like to start putting up their displays before Halloween but to not over-consume yourself with the holidays it’s a good idea to wait until after Thanksgiving. Many retail stores have their decorations up before Halloween so I use that time to get ideas on newer decorations that have come out and purchase some items that will coincide with my already existing décor. You could always use a few more ornaments on your Christmas tree, or a nice idea is to have different sets of decorations that you can alternate from year to year so that you do not become bored with your design. Choose items that are interchangeable, whether it is stockings, centerpieces, accent candles or a color motif. If you have a main color in your design then change it up with a different focal color and it will appear as though you redesigned your entire holiday décor.
No matter what your design choices may be, as long as you show some sort of festive holiday décor, you are bound to make everyone who comes to your home feel the jovial warmth and bliss of the holiday season.

Christmas Nativity Scenes and Nativity Sets.
The Christmas nativity scenes are a replica of the original birth site of Jesus and nativity sets are an essential part of the Christmas celebration all around the world. The story of the nativity comes to us from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Luke’s account describes the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, where they must go to be counted in the census ordered by Caesar Augustus. Unable to find a room in an inn, they take refuge in a stable used to shelter animals. Here Jesus is born and laid in a manger filled with hay. In the hills overlooking Bethlehem an angel tells the Shepherds of Jesus' birth. Matthew tells of a new brilliant star that appears marking the birthplace of Jesus and of the three kings that follow its light to find the Christ Child. Christmas nativity crèches originated in Europe. Many of the Christmas crèches made today are modeled after elaborate German crèches dating back to the seventeenth century. Also the Italian presepio, which used small carved nativity scene figures in the eighteenth century are used as models today. The Italian Fontanini nativity figures and accessories are popular heirloom items today. Scroll down to see “The Story of the Heirloom Fontanini nativity set and nativity scene” below. Usually the Christmas nativity sets are in miniature form and over the years, the sets have been portrayed in many ways. Around the world these sets are known as a nacimiento, belen, presipio, szopks, pesebre, portal, Krippe, or jeslicky. In America the nativity scenes are known as a creche, a word meaning “manger“ or “crib“ in French. The backgrounds and landscapes use wood, glass, ceramic, grass, straw, fabric, and the newest addition is artificial plastic stones. Select the following link to view our Nativity Creches For Nativity Sets. The creche usually depicts the entire Christmas scene: the manger, angel, star, shepherds, kings, and of course the Holy Family.
The Nativity Scene And The Arts.
The nativity pictures are a favorite subject of painters, illustrators, and other artists in the recreation of the Christmas nativity scene picture. Many of the American artists have drawn their inspiration from the classic European paintings and early Bible illustrations. Other artists, however, dressed the nativity characters and set the scenes in a way that reflected their inspiration as the European painters did in the Renaissance era.
The nativity scene photos is not only represented through illustrations and paintings. Around the world the nativity is brought to life by churches and other groups. The first live reproduction of the outside Christmas nativity of a church is given to St. Francis of Assisi for the event he staged in Greccio, Italy, in 1223. Since then, the practice has spread around the world in pageants, church reproductions, neighborhood rituals such as the posada, professionally staged plays where huge casts including live animals are utilized, and of course the school plays where sometimes the imaginative interpretations of the script provides highly original versions of the events. The Largest Nativity Set.
There are several vast collections of the nativity in palaces and museums. The worlds largest is a Swiss nativity production, the Diorama Bethlehem in Einsiedeln, which reproduces the topography of Bethlehem and stocks it with hundreds of carved figures. It not only illustrates the birth of Jesus, but also the message of the angel to the shepherds, the journey by the three kings, and the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. Nutcrackers and The Nutcracker Story.
Finding tools for opening or removing the shells of nuts challenged our earliest ancestors. Ancient excavations exposed nutshell fragments and it is thought those nuts were broken by stones. Later tools were made specifically for the task of cracking the hard shells of nuts.
The earliest nutcrackers were simple and functional, but eventually, beautifully crafted brass and even carved characters emerged as an art form in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many carved characters took on the image of birds, animals, Village Nutcracker Dolls and human forms. When a nut was placed in the "mouth" of dolls, levers or screws on the back could be worked to push the lower jaw up against the upper jaw to crush the nut. The nutcracker story began with the creation of European nutcrackers in Switzerland, France, Germany, and England during the 16th and 17th centuries.
In the German regions of Sonneberg and Erzgebirge, near the Bohemian border, the Ore mountains were rich with mineral deposits. Many villagers worked in mines, but wood carved during the winter until they could return to work. Life was tough for many people who worked long hours as miners and endured hardships and poverty. Often the miners watched as the fruits of their labor were taken by their superiors. The dolls were cleverly designed to resemble powerful people like kings, policemen, and soldiers. The townspeople enjoyed the caricatures of their rulers, because they were placed at their service to perform the lowly task of cracking nuts. When mineral deposits expired, miners began to make wood carvings the dolls all year. Eventually, these one-of-a-kind standing soldiers and kings became a symbol of the region and were sold all over Europe. Nutcracker pictures of the period recorded these early wood creations. A holiday table setting was not complete without a bowl of holiday nuts and a handsome doll standing beside it! Please select to view all our Christmas Decorations Ideas.
The combination of a useful tool and a figural form with a human appearance was well accepted by the mid-18th century. In the toy making center of Sonneberg in the Thuringian Forest there was a reference mentioned in 1735 of "nut-biters" that operated according to the principles of leverage. These nut-biters were described as sturdy, energetic forms with large heads and two moving arms. The body holds a long handled lower jaw that allows the jaw to push the nut against the upper jaw to crack it. In a carnival parade in 1783, students from Freisingen, Germany presented large models of Berchtesgaden wares, including a nut-biter in the form of a little man whose mouth and stomach were one and the same. It is in the 18th century Sonneberg and Erzgebirge regions of Germany that the term "nussknacker" appeared in the first dictionary of "High German" by the Brothers Grimm (the dictionary was begun in the 1830s), and is described as "often in form of a misshaped little man, in whose mouth the nut, by means of a lever or screw, is cracked open." Many different authority characterizations--monks, police, not-so-popular political leaders, even Napoleon--were created to amuse people, but the popular king and soldier figures undoubtedly inspired the famous 1816 nutcracker story publication of E.T.A. Hoffmann's fairy tale "Nussknacker und Mausekönig." Hoffmann wrote a story of Marie's prince nutcracker.
Thirty-five years after the publication of E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic story, it reappeared as a central character in Heinrich Hoffmann's story "King Nutcracker and the Poor Reinhold" (1851). In this version the poor Reinhold becomes acquainted with the King in a dream.
The early story did not always portray the characters in a role of the good-hearted fairy tale king. More often they wore a monk's robe or was made into the form of a mean-looking policeman, a Turk, master of the watch, a cavalry man or some other grotesque helmeted figure with a long nose. They appeared, for example, as a caricature of Napoleon on a 1813 Parisian nutcracker picture sheet. By the end of the 19th century their pictures appeared almost consistently in the catalogs of the toy wholesalers as a representative of the contemporary authorities. What started out as a practical tool often ended up as an expression of light irony and a social critique by the common people. Select the following link to view our Large Nutcrackers.
Producing Classic European Nutcrackers:
It should be noted that any one of these characters is a result of carefully planned production. Each character is created from "living" wood and may take up to three or four years to produce with over 100 separate procedures. Craftsmen with years of experience must devote their efforts to several steps in the process. Hand carving is still seen on modern figures, with native craftsmen and their families using centuries-old techniques to create the stunning results now available.
Trivia:
Nutcrackers were especially popular with Germans who coined the phrase, “Gott gibt die Nü sse aber knaker mü ss man sie selbst (God gives the nuts but we have to crack them ourselves)”. This story was intended to teach children that life was hard but rewarding. This little verse made it a favorite toy, possibly because it enabled children to reach one of life’s rewards more easily.
According to German folklore, they were given as keepsakes to bring good luck to your family and protect your home. The legend says that they represents power and strength and serves like a trusty watch dog guarding your family from evil spirits and danger. A fierce protector, they bare their teeth to the evil spirits and serves as the traditional messenger of good luck and goodwill. Select the following link to view our Wooden Nutcracker Ornaments.
Coming to America:
Although these characters have been around for ages, they were not always the collectible items as we know them today. In fact they only became popular in the United States about 50 years ago. The practice of collecting in the United States began in the early 1950’s. Many of the American soldiers who were in Germany during World War II visited open air fairs or markets. It was there that they discovered their sturdy and intriguing companion. When the soldiers returned home after the war, a new comrade came with them. Strengthened by the ability to ward off evil from its owners, the soldiers brought a figure of power and protection to their families and loved ones. And so with their rich heritage had arrived in the United States, and they were here to stay.
When Tchaikowsky’s ballet, ‘The Nutcracker Suite’ that premiered in St. Petersburg in 1892, became popular in the United States in the early 1950’s and ignited the passion for these fascinating creatures. The magic and mystery of the ballet has intrigued and enchanted audiences year after year. The strong following of this classic production greatly increased their collecting popularity in America.
History of the Nutcracker Suite:
This famous play began life in 1816 written by the German writer E.T.A. Hoffman. The play was entitled “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” and it was a tale of an unhappy girl named Marie whose only love is a nutcracker doll.
The play was adapted in 1845 by famed French novelist Alexandre Dumas, who made the play more suitable for children. In 1891 the cheerier version of the ballet was chosen as the basis of a Russian ballet to be scored by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Marius Petitpa and Lev Ivanov. Select the following link to view the Wooden Nutcracker Soldier.
The ballet opened in St. Petersburg on December 17, 1892. The ballet is the tale of a girl named Clara who is given a nutcracker doll for Christmas by her godfather, Drosselmaier. That night she falls asleep and is disturbed by an attack of mice led by the Mouse King, who wishes to take her away to his kingdom. She is rescued by soldiers of the Nutcracker who, as a prince, takes her to his land, a country full of sugarplums and waltzing flowers. She awakens the next morning with only the doll and memories of her Christmas adventure.
The original production was not an overwhelming success. Though popular in Russia it was never staged outside of that country until 1934, when it appeared in London. Since then numerous versions have been created, with the most successful being that by George Balanchine performed in 1954. The ballet is probably the world’s favorite ballet, being seen by millions each year, especially during the Christmas season.
One curious consequence of the ballets popularity has been to stimulate interest in the collection of history nutcrackers. Though many types of metal and wooden characters were made through the centuries, the commercial production of the popular toy dates only from the 1870s in Germany. The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum in Washington State exhibits over 3,000 characters from around the world.

Early Celebrations:
For thousands of years people have held celebrations where they would have feasts and decorations. Some of the earliest celebrations in the northern hemisphere were the summer and winter solstice, but more especially the winter solstice as this marked the time of the days getting longer and the nights getting shorter. The winter solstice also coincided with other festivals which were celebrated from around mid December to early January. These festivals were decorated with items of the times, such as, garland and other greenery, candles, feasting and dancing. For Christmas, the earliest reference is from the Calendar of 354, which mentions the celebration of Christmas on December 25. At the time no one knew the actual birth date of Jesus but it is assumed that early Christian leaders picked this date to coincide with many other pagan festivals as a means of facilitating their transition into Christianity. Although today many bible scholars believe that Christ was actually born in the early spring. In those days most of the decorations were outside and not inside, garland, candles, trees and food were set in the streets and hung on the outside of buildings.
The Spread of Christmas Decorations:
As Christianity spread throughout Europe many of the old festivals and decorations were incorporated into the new Christian celebrations. The idea of using greenery as decorations was meant to signify rebirth or the birth of Christ. Its believed that the Christmas Trees Artificial decorations originated in Germany, where it was decorated with candles and then later tinsel and hand blown glass balls. Queen Charlotte the wife of King George III brought the Christmas tree tradition from Germany and introduced it into England. This was later reinforced by Prince Albert during the time of Queen Victoria. And as German immigrants came to America they also brought with them, their Christmas traditions and decorations. Click to view the Christmas Decorations Ideas.
Modern Outdoor Christmas Decorations:
As people decorate today they use real or Artificial Garland and Lighted Christmas Garland greenery, including ivy, poinsettias and wreaths to bring a festive mood not only to the inside of the house but the outside as well. Many neighborhoods, communities or even whole towns get together to decorate for the Christmas season with German Glass Ornaments, Large Nutcrackers, Indoor Christmas Lights, 72 Inch Princess Pine Giant Christmas Wreaths and Nativity Figurines. Often communities give awards to homes for their outdoor decorations. A neighborhood might have each street pick a theme and all or most of the homes on that street decorate for that theme, such as snowmen, Santa, Christmas carols, North Pole and nativity scenes. The same scene is played out in much of the world, even in nations that are typically non-Christian where the holiday is more of an economic event and less about celebrating the birth
| | | Prelit Christmas Trees ( 22 ) | |
The modernization of the pre lit Christmas tree has really caught on in recent years. You will now notice that many stores and homes have made the change from real trees to artificial trees with the added bonus of buying it pre lit to save on the time and hassle of messing around with endless strands of holiday lights.
Some of the premium pre lit Christmas trees are now made to look even more realistic than in previous models. They are manufactured to look three-dimensional on the tip section to resemble needles on a real tree. Many of the premium grade trees available have different lighting options or configurations; C7 lights, LED C7 lights or mini lights to name just a few on the market. The added incentive to having a pre lit Christmas tree is knowing that if one bulb goes out on your tree then you do not have to replace a whole string of lights, the tree will stay completely lit up. An added benefit is that most of the artificial pre lit trees are flame retardant and your tree is less likely to go up in smoke.
Now, because you have a pre lit Christmas tree, you need to take extra care when it comes time to packing away your beautiful christmas decorations. You need to be gentle so that you do not damage or break any of the lights that come attached to the tree. Depending on what company you make the purchase from, you will need to read all accompanying material, especially some of the warranty guidelines for your tree. Some manufacturers will offer a warranty on the lighting components separate from the one offered on the construction and parts of the tree. Most premium artificial Christmas trees are made from materials like PVC (poly vinyl chloride) or PE (poly ethylene) and will withstand their fair share of handling. Both options have their advantages. PE trees tend to look a little more realistic since they don’t require as much fluffing of branches as the PVC do right out of the box.
In order to ensure the sustainability of your pre lit tree, it’s a good idea to package your tree safely up for the year. Be sure to protect the bulbs on the tree so that they do not break between holiday seasons. You can find specialty Christmas tree storage bags that will help you in the endeavor. It’s still a good idea to keep your tree in a safe spot during the holidays to ensure that it does not fall over while decorated with all the ornaments attached during your festivities. Keep your tree in a low traffic area if at all possible, and if you have enough space in your home, you may want to consider using a rotating tree stand. You can plug your pre lit Christmas tree directly into the stand and it will rotate the entire tree so that all sides of your tree can be admired without one side facing the wall indefinitely.

Santa Claus Pictures.
The history of the Santa Claus tradition as we know him today first emerged when the Dutch settlers came to Manhattan on Christmas day 1624. Sinterklaas the good saint in Holland was named the patron of their new home. In Holland, Sinterklaas (Santa Claus) wore a red robe while riding a white horse, and cared a bag of gifts to fill the children's stockings. A sinister assistant called Black Pete proceeded Sinterklaas in the Holland tradition to seek out the naughty boys and girls who would not receive gifts. Black Pete, to the delight of all the American children, was left behind in Holland by Sinterklaas. By the late 1600s and through out the 1700s Sinterklaas would be known as Sancte Clause who would arrive on Christmas eve, December 24.
It was not until the 1800s that the Santa as we know him today started to emerge. Writers and artist depicted a lovable jolly fellow, small in size with a giving heart. On Christmas eve he would ride in a magnificent sleigh pulled by eight reindeer over the treetops and roofs. He dropped gifts down the chimneys of good boys and girls. In the early 1820’s Clement Moore describes St. Nicholas as dressed in a fur hat and suit, with rosy dimpled cheeks and a red cherry nose. His face was broad with a droll little mouth and a snow-white beard. St Nicholas was chubby and plump with a little round belly that shook like a bowlful of jelly. It is Moore's description of Santa that we most often think of today. Up to this point his physical appearance were open to individual interpretations as well as the colors of his suit. Clement Moore also tells us the names of his reindeer. Select the following link to read Clement Moore's Christmas Poem "Twas The Night Before Christmas" to find out the reindeer names.
In 1821, the first Santa Claus pictures were illustrated along with a poem titled “The Children’s Friend, A New-Year’s Present to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve” gave us one of the earliest images of Santa when it was published along with eight color lithographs. One of the lithograph illustrated him dressed in a red suit that was not anything like a suit of clothing an American might be wearing, nor like a flowing robe as Saint Nicolas might wear.
In 1837 Robert Weir an art teacher at West Point painted the first American portrait. He posed him wearing a stocking hat and short suit as he started to climb into a chimney with a sack overflowing with Christmas gifts as described in Moore‘s poem. Along with the stocking hat and short suit Weir added a long clay pipe and a red cape edged in fur to his character. To view our Unusual Christmas Gifts.
The elves appeared as early as 1856 in an unpublished book titled “Christmas Elves.” He relied on helpful elves who worked long hours in their polar workshop to make Christmas toys for all the children. Godey’s Magazine also incorporated elves in their engravings described below. The elves would surround Santa Claus while he was working in his workshop.
In 1863, a picture drawn by Thomas Nast gave Americans a Santa Claus that looked and behaved like a real person. For twenty-three years, his annual drawings of him in Harpers Weekly magazine allowed Americans to peek into his magical world. The pictures showed him reading letters from children, making lists, and toys year around in the workshop. Select the link to view our Santa Ornaments. When Nast was asked to illustrate Moore's charming verse for a book of children's poems, he gave us a softer, kinder person who was still old but appeared less stern than the St. Nicholas. He dressed him in a red and white suit and hat. The elf's were dressed in red endowed with human characteristics. Most important of all, Nast gave Santa a home at the North Pole.
The December 1867 issue of Godey’s magazines opened with an engraving of a bearded old character wearing a long tunic suit. He carried a staff in one hand and in the other hand held out a doll toward a crowd of children. The 1868 the December issue had instructions on how to make a pine cone Santa in the craft section. He had a full bag of toys, apples and nuts. He was carrying a Christmas tree, a birch staff and a wooden nutcracker. Select the following link to view our Christmas Nutcracker Decorations. In 1873 Godey showed him working in his workshop surrounded by elves and Christmas toys for children. The Christmas issue in 1878 opened with an engraving titled “Welcome, Kriss Kringle. Come In” showed him in a flowing robe, with a long white beard and hair, wearing a tall peaked hat.
Markus Rautio announced on his popular children’s show in 1927 that Santa and his elf assistants lived in Lapland's korvatunturi where the landscape resembles a huge ear. This is where Santa listens to find out if the children are being naughty or nice. A warning to all boys and girls that Santa is listening and making a list of stops before he hitches the reindeer to the sleigh filled with toys for his sleigh ride on Christmas eve. The final touch as we know Santa today came in the 1931 drawing by Haddon Sundblom. His billboards and other advertisements for Coca Cola-Cola featured a portly, grandfatherly man with human proportions and a ruddy complexion. Sunblom's exuberant, twinkle-eyed fellow firmly fixed the gift-giver's image into the publics mind. The pictures portrayed a life size figure with the spirit of an elf resembling Clement Moore's physical description. He wore a red suit that was trimmed with white fur and wearing black boots. History of Baseball:
Baseball at the professional level is the best-known of the family of related bat-and-ball games. Other present-day bat-and-ball games include softball, cricket, stickball, rounders, pesäpallo, punchball, kickball and British baseball. The distinct evolution of baseball from among these various bat-and-ball games is difficult to trace with any precision. But the game recognized as the first in U.S. history to be officially recorded took place on June 19, 1846, in Hoboken, New Jersey, with the New York Nine defeating the New York Knickerbockers, 23 to 1, in four innings.
