The Legend of Santa Claus

History of the Gift Giver:
There are many legends that have grown up around the Santa Claus persona. Many countries either have their own legend or have adopted other countries legends into their own mythos. Father Christmas is the principle gift giver for much of southern and western Europe. He is considered the embodiment of the Christmas Feast which in its pagan form was the winter feast. But today Father Christmas is usually synonymous with Santa Claus.

Saint Nicholas was an early Christian from an area that is today part of Turkey. He was made Bishop of Myra at a relatively young age and was known for his good works and charity. Being a Bishop he wore the red robes of a Bishop with the white collar, which seems to have been somewhat of the basics for the current red and white outfit similar to the Red Plush Santa Suit that Santa Claus wears today.

Christkind which means Christ Child in Germany, is pronounced kristkint. This also appears to be where the name Kris Kringle comes from, a mispronunciation of Christkind. Martin Luther in an attempt to discourage people from using Saint Nicholas as the gift giver at Christmas time encouraged the use of the Christ Child as a reference to the baby Jesus. Ironically the use eventually became adopted by the Catholic church, even as it was slowly being replaced with Father Christmas.

Santa Claus in the Modern World:
Santa today has become the advertising spokesman for Christmas! In some non Christian countries it is merely a commercial holiday, not just for spending time helping others and sharing but purely for the commercialization of it. Its time to remember what the event is that this holiday is all about. The wise men didnt stop off at Walmart on their way to visit the infant Christ, nor did they endorse a Ford camel over a Chevy camel for the smoothest ride across the desert. They went to see the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

Backyard Birds.

Birds.
Birds are beautiful, fascinating creatures. They have been a medium for art, song and literature for centuries. Even non bird watchers are captivated by the beauty and grace of a hawk or an eagle. Who has not looked out of the window and watched a Red Robin catch worms or felt a sense of calm when listening to the calls and songs of local birds.
People across the country are becoming more aware of nature and the impact of everyday life on our Bird population. An ever increasing number of people are finding ways to attract local and migratory Birds to their communities and even to their own backyards. The National Wildlife Federation, many National and local foundations, companies and Universities provide detailed information on how this can be done.

Attracting Birds to your Backyard.
The easiest way is to provide them with a little food. Start with a Bird feeder or Bird bath. A Bird bath should just provide a little water in a shallow rough textured container.
If you plan to feed the Birds in your area you should do a little research to find out what species are in your area and what they like to eat. Then decide how often you want to feed them. Some people feed their Birds year round and find someone to maintain their Bird feeder when they are away on vacation. Other people only supply food during the seasons when their natural supply is not adequate.
If you really want to attract Birds to your Backyard you can plant flowers, shrubs, trees and bushes that provide them with food and nesting supplies. Again you would need to determine which species of Birds you want in your yard and which ones you do not want and plant accordingly.
For example;
Hummingbirds like Standing Cypress, Nasturtiums and Bottlebrush.
Chickadees and other Songbirds like Mulberries and Honeysuckle.
Red Cardinals like White Ash, American Elm and Blackberries.
Blue Birds like insects best but eat fruits and berries in the winter.

The Christmas Stocking

History of Christmas Stockings:
The legend goes that there was a righteous and honorable man whose wife had died, leaving him to care for their three daughters. The tradition in that country at the time was that a daughter had to have a dowry to be able to get married, as this man was poor he felt his daughters would never be able to marry. One day this information came to the attention of Nicholas the Bishop of Myra, so late one night he went to the mans cottage. Looking in the window he saw that the daughters had washed cloths and hung them around the fireplace to dry, noticing their stockings hanging with the rest of their clothes he took out three small bags of gold and carefully tossed them through the open window into the stockings. The next morning as the daughters were gathering their clothes they found the bags of gold, now they had money for a dowry! Of course each girl married well and lived happily ever after. As this legend grew more people began to leave stockings or small sacks hanging around the fire place in hopes that Saint Nicholas would leave them something as well. They needed a 60 Inch Giant Christmas Stocking.

Christmas Stockings in America:
The person that most helped the tradition of hanging stockings by the fireplace was Clement Moore and his most famous of poems A Visit from St. Nicholas, which today is called The Night before Christmas. And as anyone who has read the poem would know, it says, the stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. And today the Christmas stocking is an essential part in the celebration of Christmas in America. Although the practice of using everyday wearable socks has given way to a variety of specialty Christmas stockings like the Cowboy Christmas Stocking or the Nutcracker Stocking or even a Baby Boy Satin Stocking. Today there is a wide selection of Christmas stockings for everyone and even a selection for pets like the Puppy Dog Stockings.

Action Sports.

History of Skateboarding.
Skateboarding began in Southern California sometime in the late 40s or early 50s. Southern California has some of the most popular surfing spots in the state which attract surfers from all over the world. Even when the waves were not right the surfers wanted to be able to surf so somehow skateboarding evolved, no one really knows who built the very first skateboard, but the idea caught on and spread like wild fire. Today there are skateparks, ramp skating, trick skating and the Skateboard itself has evolved to allow skaters the ability to perform very complicated tricks and maneuvers.

History of Snowboarding.
The first Snowboard was called the Snurfer and was manufactured as a toy in 1966. I was basically a Skateboard with no wheels that you would steer with a rope. It had no bindings but would allow your boots to adhere to the board. In the early 70s a surfer developed a Snowboard called the Winterstick based on the feel of a surfboard but with the same function as skis. Through the years Snowboards and Snowboarding have increased greatly in popularity with the boards now being designed to enable Snowboards to race and perform freestyle tricks.

History of Skiing.
Skiing began as a means of travel and transportation. Sondre Norheim of Norway helped develop Skiing as Recreation and a Sport. In the mid to late 1800s lighter, thinner, cambered skis and a new stiff binding were developed which made it possible for skiers to swing, jump and maneuver turns while skiing down hill. Some types of skiing include; Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Military Skiing, Nordic Jumping or ski flying and Telemark Skiing.

History of Cycling.
Cycling has grown in popularity over the years and throughout the world. In some countries it is a means of transportation through very narrow streets that will not allow cars to travel or countries where cars are too expensive. Cycling as a sport has increased in popularity throughout the world as well and uses bikes that are specially designed for the terrain and speeds.

Holiday Wreaths & Decorative Christmas Wreaths

Decorative Christmas Wreaths and Holiday Wreaths.

Holiday wreaths have long been made by twisting or bending evergreen branches into a circular shape. The word crown comes from the Latin word corona which means wreath or garland. In Christianity the holiday wreath represents the circle, and likewise is given as a symbol of eternity. When made of evergreen leaves and branches the wreaths symbolize everlasting life with the green color symbolizing hope and new life. Select to view all of our Christmas Decorations Ideas.

The History of Christmas Wreaths.

Evergreen plants, such as holly, ivy and pine, which stay green all year, have long been used to create holiday wreaths. Such greens as holly, ivy, and mistletoe like the Christmas Mistletoe Ball have special meaning since they not only stay green, they bear fruit during the harsh winter months. Anciently people symbolized these plants to represent the promise of new or everlasting life. The people of northern Europe and the Romans decorated their homes with evergreen boughs during their winter festivals. The early Greeks and Romans brought green boughs indoors as a living reminder of nature's vitality like the 36 Inch Douglas Fir Christmas Wreaths.

Holiday Wreaths.

Advent wreaths originated as folk traditions of the people of northern Europe. Both the evergreen and the circular shape symbolized everlasting life. The candle light gave the people comfort at that darkest time of the year, they needed some Battery Operated Candles With Batteries. Traditionally an advent wreath consists of four candles, three purple and one rose colored.

Christmas wreaths are a friendly welcome to all.

Traditional Christmas wreaths are a symbol of faith. Since wreaths are a circle with no beginning or end, they symbolize God's eternity and mercy during the Christmas season. When Christmas Wreaths are decorated with evergreen leaves and branches they symbolize everlasting life and God's everlasting love. Decorating Your Christmas Tree.

Choose A Theme.

This is a matter of taste. Some people have beautifully decorated trees that are a Hodgepodge of ornaments, themes, colors and mementos collected over years.
If this is your first Christmas Tree and you do not have any ornaments or mementos to add to it yet then start simple. Pick a theme like Snowman Christmas Ornaments and choose a few and add one or two colors of Glass Christmas Ornaments Balls to compliment the selection. You can change the look each year by adding something extra or even taking something away, as your tastes and home change.

Adding Large Decorations.

After the lights are turned on, stand a few feet away from the tree and squint. You will see where all the large holes are. Some types of decorations you could add here are Novelty Lights, 3-4 inch diameter ornament balls, any style ornaments that are 4-5 inches long or floral picks or Poinsettia FloralBouquets.

Adding Garlands.

Next you add any Garlands you might like. These can be the traditional Popcorn Garland, Cranberry Garland, Candy Garland, Gingerbread Garland, Foil Garland or Tinsel Garland. You can even add a green garland such as an Apple Garland with Pine Cones. The rule of thumb is 2 yards of garland for every foot of tree height.
Add the Green Garland first. Start at the top of the tree and work you way down draping it in small curves that increase gradually as you move down the tree. If you will also be adding Popcorn, Cranberry or Crystal Mirrored Garland, then you will want the Green Garland a little further back on the branch to let the Bead Garland hang on the edge of the tips.
You can also use Unique Christmas Ribbon as garland. The rule of thumb is the same and you add it to the tree in the same general manner.

Adding Ornaments.

Once the Garland is in place hang your smaller ornaments as you like. This is where you hang the smaller ornaments in your chosen theme, such as Fish Ornaments, Military Nutcracker Ornaments or Nutcracker Ballet Ornaments or Glass Christmas Ornaments.

Christmas Tree Toppers.

There are lots of styles of Christmas Tree Toppers. They come is all the different stars such as, Lighted Tinsel Star Toppers, Moravian Star Tree Toppers, Five Pointed Star Toppers and Star of Bethlehem Tree Toppers. There are Angel Tree Toppers in lots of colors and styles like, Elegant Gold Angels, Midnight Blue Fiber Optic Angels, Burgundy and Gold Angel Toppers, Green Angel Gifts and Animated Angel Toppers. Lighting A Christmas Tree.

Putting the Lights on the Tree.

If you have purchased a Live Christmas Tree it is best to use the mini Indoor Christmas Light Strands. They burn cooler for Live Christmas Trees and have five inch spacing between the bulbs to make it easier to wrap on the tips of your tree.
To add them to a Live Christmas Tree either lay them on top of the branches or gently loop them over the tips. You can put them up the branches from the trunk or just on the tips.
You can add lights to Unlit Artificial Christmas Trees so they stay on from year to year. If you choose to do this it is a good idea to light the tree with strands of 50 Miniature Christmas Light Bulb Sets with Green Wire. It is much easier and quicker to replace a strand of 50 lights than a strand of 100. The top section of most trees is the smallest and can usually be lit with strands of 20 Christmas Light Bulbs or 35 Christmas Light Bulb Sets.

Start at the back of the branch just in front of the trunk and put a light on top of the tip where it joins the branch. Then, working your way to the end of the branch, secure a light to as many of the tips as you like. Then wrap the lights on as many of the tips on the end of the branches as you like. You will crisscross under the center of the branch after securing a light to a tip and then just move from one tip to the next on the ends of the branches.
There are two variations to this process. One is to put the light on top of the tip where it connects to the branch and the other is to wrap the light up the tip and back down so the light bulb is on the end of each of the tips.

Adding C7 Lights For Color.

Indoor or Outdoor C7 Light Sets come in clear, multi, red, green, blue, amber, pink and purple. They also come in Stationary and Twinkle sets. These lights add color and variety to your lighting. First you see the tiny white lights that look like stars then you have the larger vibrant colored C7 lights. C7 lights attach to the tips with a clip. For a really beautiful look, keep the C7 lights close to the trunk and only bring them about half the way down the branch. This really adds depth.

If you do not have electrical sockets near a small Christmas Tree you can use Battery Operated Lights instead of plug in lights. Also check out all our Christmas Decorations Ideas.

Purchasing A Christmas Tree.

Where To Put It.
This is one of the most important questions. Most people find the tree first. The problem is people go tree shopping and fall in love with a tree they simply have to have, only to get home and find it does not fit.
So take a look around your home and decide where the best place to display your tree is. Then how much work will it take to put it there? Do you simply move a small table to another room or do you have to completely rearrange the room.
Next measure the space you have created. How much room do you have between pieces of furniture on either side and how much room do you have from the wall out into the room. You must also know your ceiling height. Some building codes are 7feet 6inches but most are 8feet. Unless you have cathedral ceilings, then you can have slopes from 10 to 14 feet tall and more.

Choosing a Tree.
The first thing to consider is which kind of tree you want, Live or Artificial. The Pros to a Live Tree are; they smell nice and are considered by some to be traditional and they come in many shapes and sizes. The Cons are; they drop their needles and make a mess, they dry out fast, they turn brown you have to remember to add water.
The Pros to an Artificial Tree are; They do not lose their needles, they stay green, they need no water, you don’t have to add lights every year and they come in all shapes and sizes ranging from 2 foot Miniature Christmas Trees to 9 foot Rustic Pine Christmas Trees with no lights and 2 foot Small Lighted Christmas Trees to 9 foot Pre Lit Artificial Trees. They can also come with matching 20 inch to 36 inch Holiday Wreaths or 24 inch to 60 inch PreLit Large Christmas Wreaths and 10 x 9 Artificial Christmas Garland to 18 x 9 PreLit Christmas Garland. The Cons are; they have no pine scent.
Once you decide what size tree you need, where you want to put it and which type of tree you want then go shopping!
Some things to watch for when selecting a Live Christmas Tree are; Is it brown or dark green? Are the needles dry and brittle or plump and soft? Are there needles all over the floor under the tree? Then check the shape of the tree and spacing between the rows of branches.
Some things to look for when buying an Artificial Tree are; touch the tips, make sure the feel of the tree agrees with you. You have to get your hands into a tree to decorate and light it, if the needles and branches are scratchy and rough you might not like it. Then gently grab a tip and run it thru you hand. Then open your hand and look at it; is your hand green? Do you have a hand full of needles? Did the tree stay in place or almost fall on you? If the tree tries to come down when you do this, either you pulled way to hard or the stand is not stable for the size of the tree. This could be a problem if you have a small, curious child or animals. Which ever tree you choose the final test is called a squint test. Stand back a few feet and squint your eyes at the tree. This will show you all the holes, which would need to be filled with large ornaments or floral picks.

Advent Calendars

History of Advent:
Advent began to be celebrated or followed in the fourth century, shortly after the first council of Nicaea dictated the Nicene Creed, wherein they tried to set forth their interpretation of the scriptures and how people should believe and what holidays they should have and when. The word advent means coming, as in the coming of Jesus Christ. Advent celebrates his first coming and looks forward to his second coming. The German Lutherans seem to be the first Christians to come up with the advent calendar, which started on December first and was used to count down the days to the birth of baby Jesus. When the first commercial calendar was made is a point of dispute, some saying it was made in 1902 others say 1908 by Gerhard Lang. Unfortunately his firm went out of business in the mid 1930s and the practice of using advent calendars seems to have died off during World War 2. Once the war was over a man named Richard Sellmer who lived in Stuttgart Germany started making the advent calendars once more.

Modern Advent Calendars:
Most advent calendars have 24 little doors like the Wooden Santa Advent Calendar, behind the doors there can be a picture or a bible verse, something to do with the nativity. There are some electronics like the Talking Advent Calendars with Nativity Scene which do both, as you open the door you hear about the ornament inside. Today calendars also have candy or chocolate inside them, which seems more directed at children or adults with a good sweet tooth. But since there is nothing relating to the birth of Christ, it seems these are more for counting down the days till Christmas when Santa brings presents, like the Santa and Tree Advent Calendar.

Mrs. Claus and the Elves

Mrs. Claus:
Mrs. Claus is the wife of Santa Claus. In her earlier days she was often silent or at least a woman of very few words, she was also often found baking in the kitchen. In recent films and television shows she is much more included in the world of Santa Claus. Looking back from current time to the early days of Mrs. Claus she has always been portrayed as heavy set, like her husband, with white hair like the White Stylish Mrs Claus Wig, a red dress or Mrs. Claus Costume that matches Santas outfit, with a Mrs. Claus White Cotton Apron and sometimes with glasses on.

Christmas Elves:
The elves that work with Santa Claus making all the toys for children the world over are typically pictured as the size of a child. They have pointed ears and are very industrious and creative, hence why and how they are able to make so many toys. They are shown wearing a Green Velvet Elf Costume, while some wear a red elf suit, they usually have small pointed hats as well.

Santas Helpers:
Everyone knows how busy Santa is at the Christmas season, so he often times calls on others to help him. Some fill in for Santa at Malls, Christmas parties and such, and many of these Santas need helpers themselves. Some of these helpers dress up like pixies, wearing a Little Pixies Fairies Costume while others dress as an elf helper, wearing the Santa Helper Two Piece Velvet Elf Suit.
