If this year is your first time buying a tree and choosing Christmas tree decorations, here is a guide to systematically tackle the task before you. If you have grown up always having a Christmas tree, and putting up decorations that were already chosen for you, you may want to read this anyway. This article may give you some new ideas for a tree that will be unique to you, in your own home, and not a duplication of what your parents may have had in your childhood home.

The first order of business is to have a strategy. Ask yourself the following questions: Are you in your first apartment or your first home, and do you plan to be there for years to come or for just a short period of time? Do you want to invest in long-term Christmas decorations, or something that will last only about five years and then discarded? Once a conclusion is made, choose a Christmas tree that suits you. There are small artificial trees, narrow, white, various colors, aluminum, silver, or traditional, and the prices and quality run the gamut. If you go with a real tree, bear I mind that after a few years, it could start costing you more that a faux tree. The next step is choosing your Christmas tree decorations.

In order to decorate your tree of choice, use your imagination. Picture what you want the tree to look like. Look at examples on the internet or in magazines and decide what is best for the surroundings of your dwelling. Do you want something simple? Do you want traditional or modern looking? Do you want a lot of holiday lights and ornaments, or the bare minimum to start out? When it comes to Christmas tree decorations, how much is too much for you? Have an idea of the density of the decorations you want. When you go shopping for the decorations, take a picture of your tree with you to match tones and color coordinate. Many of the stores will organize their ornaments and lights by colors. Most stores will put all of the colored ornaments together, whether blue, gold, white, red, silver, etc. All of the other ornaments with mixed colors will be grouped in a different section. You may decide to have or omit lights for your scheme of Christmas tree decorations, depending on your situation. However, choosing the lights is relatively simple. There are multi-colored, all one color or white strings of lights. Choose the bulb size, and decide the type of bulb you would like to use as well. Buy more lights than you think you will need and note that the most appealing technique is to weave the strings of bulbs in and out from the trunk to the tips of the branches. If you find that you have left over light strings they can always be returned if unopened. Choose the garland to match the color scheme of the lights and ornaments. The last item of Christmas tree decorations is the skirt to cover the tree stand. It is best to match your tree color scheme, and a skirt will always look better than letting the tree stand show, even if you plan to cover the bottom with presents.
