Many of the traditions we have today in America come from various countries. These traditions were passed on when immigrants came from their homeland. For instance, the Dutch brought along St. Nickolas. They called him Sint Nickolaas, which was later changed to Sinter Klaas. Here are some more traditions and fun facts passed about Christmas:

• The day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, is thought to be the busiest shopping day of the year. It, in fact, is not. It falls somewhere between the 5^th and 10^th busiest days. The Friday and Saturday before Christmas come in at number one and two.
• In 1895, American Ralph E. Morris came up with the idea of electrical Christmas tree lights. This indoor Christmas light was much safer than the candles that were used in years prior.
• Today in the United States, there are 78 people named S. Claus, and there is actually a Kriss Kringle listed as well.
• In the United States, an estimated 37.1 million live Christmas trees are sold every year. Since 1991, artificial Christmas trees for sale have outsold real ones.
• The average number of Christmas cards sent and received by American households is 28.

• In the Ukraine, the tree is decorated with artificial spider webs. If one is found on the tree, it is thought to be good luck.
• On December 9, 1842, the first Christmas card was created in England.

• Santa Claus is known throughout the world. He has many different names: in England he Father Christmas, The people of France know him as Pere Noel(Father Christmas), in Germany he is Christkind, and in Holland he is simply known as St. Nicholas.
