The poem was supposed to have been written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1823. Donner and Blitzen were originally called "Dunder and Blixem," which is Dutch for thunder and lightning, names that imply power and might. Thus when Moore named Santa’s reindeer, he named them to poetically mean that the reindeer were flying through the night, dominant, swift, and lively.
