Silent Night Chapel
In 1816, the world’s most beloved Christmas song, “Stille Nacht” or “Silent Night” was written by Father Joseph Mohr. Franz Gruber, Mohr’s friend, composed the music. “Stille Nacht” was sung, in German, for the very first time on Christmas Eve in 1818 in the St. Nikolaus Church, Oberndorf by Salzburg, Austria.
The organ was broken, so the song was accompanied by guitar. In 1907, St. Niklous Church was damaged in a flood and torn down.
In memory of this famous landmark and “Stille Nacht”, the Austrian people built the “Silent Night Chapel” on the altar site of the original St. Nikolaus church.
The Silent Night Chapel took 13 years to complete, from 1924 through 1934 and formally dedicated in 1937. Select this link to view our Ornament Storage Boxes.
