St. Nikolaus and the Meaning of Christmas
How do children learn the true spirit and meaning of Christmas? It is not just by observing acts of charity once a year, but through a lifetime of lessons taught by parents and respected elders. Christmas should be celebrated in our hearts and minds all year long.
St. Nikolaus, a benevolent man of God, felt it was important for children to learn the meaning of Christmas; so he carefully chose nine symbols to show them. In his bag, he carried ornaments of a fir tree, a star, a candle, a wreath, an image of himself, a holly leaf, a gift, a candy cane, an angel and a bell’ children will remember these for the rest of their lives.
As he hung each ornament on the Christmas tree, he spoke of the meaning each one has…
The Fir Tree is pure green in color all year long, evergreen, and depicts the everlasting hope of mankind. All the needles point to heaven, making it a symbol of a person’s thoughts and prayers turning toward heaven.
The Star is the brilliant star, the heavenly sign of promises long ago, the star that led the Wise Men to the Christ Child. God promised a Savior and the star was the sign of fulfillment of that promise.
The Candle represents Christ as the light of the world and when we see the candle glowing we are reminded of Him who takes away our darkness.
A Wreath, one continuous circle and evergreen, symbolizes the eternal nature of His never ceasing love.
St. Nikolaus is an image of Himself and reminds children of generosity and good will toward all people.
A Holly Leaf represents immortality. It reminds us of the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ and the berries represent the blood shed by Him.
The Gift reminds us God gave us his only begotten Son. Like the Wise Men who brought gold, frankincense and myrrh, we should give gifts in the same spirit; freely and from our heart. Select this link to view our Artificial Prelit Trees.

Old World Christmas Santa Claus
Santa Claus truly represents a veritable melting pot of cultures, beliefs and traditions. As immigrants arrived in the New World centuries ago, along with their hopes and dreams for a better future, they brought with them their beliefs and customs surrounding the holidays. The Germans brought their Belznickel and Christkindl, the Scandinavians their gift giving elves and the Dutch introduced the Sinterklaas, all representing the celebration of St. Nicholas. The American legend of Santa Claus embodies childhood innocence and magical delight, as Santa Claus is the bearer of gifts and treats for children everywhere. With his home at the wintry North Pole, he and his merry elves created the toys that put the magic into the holidays. He was a kind and gentle figure, and starry eyed children awaited his annual visit with spirited anticipation. Select this link to view our Ornament Sets.
The legend of Santa Claus is derived in part from the benevolent European figure St. Nicholas, and in part from American writers who wrote children’s poems in the nineteenth century. Clement Moore, who wrote “A Visit From St. Nicholas” in 1822, and Thomas Nast, the famed political cartoonist who depicted Santa Claus in the 1860’s as an elfin figure, contributed greatly to this fantasy. Their descriptions of the jolly man clad in red and white created the folk hero children around the world dream about on Christmas Eve. This American patron saint of children certainly brings joy and delight to all during the holidays. Select this link to view our Santa Ornaments.
