Joseph:
What sort of a man was Joseph, the man God chose to care for Mary throughout her pregnancy? He was virtuous and hard working…a carpenter educated at his father’s knee. But he was also very kind. When an angel spoke to Joseph in a dream and told him of the son Mary was to have, he tenderly pledged to care for her and her child in the years ahead.
Joseph lovingly protected his wife throughout her pregnancy and watched in wonder as the child grew inside her. He became more distressed than Mary when word went out across the nation that all citizens were required to report to their ancestral homes for a census, but she comforted Joseph as he set about finding transportation.
It is said that when Joseph returned to his wife with the only animal he could afford, that he was ashamed and hid the little donkey behind his back. But Mary was not upset and indeed, she allowed Joseph to help her mount the beast and the husband led his wife to the city of David
When the two arrived in Bethlehem, Mary’s labor had already begun. Joseph was desperate in his effort to find shelter for his wife and had to settle for a stable behind an inn, for no rooms were left in the village. They repaired to the area with haste and from the moment Joseph opened the door, he felt discouraged.
”We cannot stay here,” he said to Mary. “It is not a fitting place for the child to be born. I must find some other place for you tonight.”
But his wife would here no more of his plea and insisted that he help her to a soft place on the straw. Joseph stayed close to his wife. He placed clothes over her to keep the night chill away. And he unrolled the rug Mary had used to carry the child’s newly sewn clothing.
As the night wore on, the single lantern giving light began to flicker and Joseph cried out that the oil was gone. But before he could consider going out into the night in search of more oil, a wondrous star appeared in the sky, lighting the entire stable and causing all the animals to burst into a beautiful chorus of thanksgiving. And from the corner came the voice of Mary.
”Come see the child you have taken such loving care of, my husband,” Jospeh heard his wife say in a strong, clear voice.
