Christmas Tree
The Christmas tree originated in Germany in the 1800’s. For many it is the focal point of their Christmas decorations and festivities. Originally in the Old World, Europeans adorned their trees with cookies, fruits and candles. In the 1850’s, German craftsmen perfected the art of glass blown ornaments and soon Christmas trees shimmered with beautiful glass ornaments. Today’s modern Christmas tree holds lights and ornaments of all varieties and all colors of the spectrum while beneath it are wondrous gifts. A symbol of triumph over winter’s bitter cold, the Christmas evergreen has long inspired hope in the hearts of mankind. Select this link to view our Ornament Sets.
Birds
Birds have grown to symbolize many things during the Christmas Season. Birds are often given to a new family as a wish of happiness and joy. In Germany, it is believed that birds assist Santa in monitoring the actions of little ones to ensure that they are good. A friend to young and old, Christmas would not be the same without birds. The Glass Bird Ornament
Birds are considered a universal symbol of happiness and joy and are regarded by many to be a necessity on the Christmas tree. Glassblowers would often carefully capture wild birds in autumn to keep in cages in their workshops and to shelter them during the winter months. The sound of the gas flame from the Bunsen burners used to make glass ornaments would prompt the birds to sing throughout the day, thereby entertaining the entire family. Because bird ornaments were difficult to create, few glassblowing families in Germany specialized in the making of these special pieces. Many collectors remember the lovely glass bird ornaments delicately perched on their grandmother’s tree, which is one reason birds have continued to be among the most coveted of glass ornaments. Even today, birds represent messengers of love and the harbingers of good things to come. Select this link to view our Old World Father Christmas Ornaments.
