Bird Feathers.
Feathers are the most characteristic feature of a Bird and are mainly made of Keratin. Feathers are light, waterproof and trap air to slow heat loss, making them perfect insulators. They are also used for flight and maneuvering. Select this link to view our Glass Christmas Ornaments.
The color of a Birds feathers are useful as camouflage and also in courtship and mating. Melanin is just one of the pigments used to form colors in Bird feathers and is responsible for black and the brown colors.
Feathers grow from a special ring of cells which produce a series of rings of cells that form a tube. One side of the tube is thickened and the other side is weaker. As feathers grow they break along the line of weakness and spread out. Select this link to view our Christmas Ornament Sets.
Birds replace their feathers at intervals either because they wear out or to produce a different color plumage or because of molting. Mature feathers are dead and require energy to be replaced which can cause some birds to have difficulty flying such as ducks and most auks who lose the power of flight while molting.
