Our Christmas angel candle holders are 9 inches tall. The Christmas angel candle holders are cradling a small lamb in their arms. These Christmas angels have a candle holder on their back just below their wings. The candle holder will hold a taper candle. There is also a winding mechanism on the bottom of the angel that allows her to play “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem.” The angel candle holder is wearing an ivory gown with gold trim around the collar, cuffs and hem. There are star cutouts around the skirt. The angel’s wings are highlighted with gold. Select this link to view our selection of Music Boxes.

Note: Do Not Over Wind. Over winding will lock or damage the music box mechanism.

Angels
According to many religions an angel is a spiritual being created by God. The word angel comes from a Greek word meaning messenger or one who is sent. According to religious tradition, angels live in heaven and act as God’s servants and as messengers between God and human beings. They also serve as guardians of individuals and nations. Angels traditionally are pictured as having a human body and wings. Poets and artists have portrayed angels as symbols of innocence or virtue.
In some religions, legends tell of bright, powerful spirits that appear in dreams and visions and protect people or tribes. In Hinduism and Buddhism, many major gods are accompanied by a band or court of spiritual beings.
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam developed the most elaborate doctrines about angels. These religions recognize an order of beings in which angels rank above human beings but under God. God is all powerful and the human is sometimes portrayed as in Gods image.
The concept of angels with a human body and wings began in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament, and in Christianity. Later tradition refers to many archangels, angels of high rank, including Saint Michael.
Christian doctrine regarding angels reached full development during a AD 1100’s and 1200’s especially in the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas believed angels were necessary to fill the gap between God and human beings. He taught that countless numbers of angels existed and that they were immortal. According to Aquinas, angels knew everything except what depended on human choice and what was known only to God.
The Islamic belief in angels resembles that of Judaism and Christianity. These three faiths place angels near God and give special duties to some.

Candles.
Man has been using candles since 3000 B.C. The ancients used them to prolong the day. Candles became a symbol of expressing joy. The Romans exchanged glowing tapers as expressions of goodwill and affection. The use of candles for Christmas celebrations was absorbed into the symbol of Jesus as the light of the World, and as a symbol of everlasting life.
The tradition of putting candles in the windows comes from Ireland. When Christianity was suppressed in Ireland, the priest had to travel secretly, through the night, to visit his parishioners. Irish Christians left their doors unlocked and candles in the windows to show the priests where there was a friendly place to stay and to guide them through the dark night. When the English authorities questioned the people, they explained that the candles were for Mary and Joseph.

Christmas Cards.
The very modern tradition evolved from English school boys in the early 1800’s. They would send Christmas pieces or greetings to their parents. They were written on decorated sheets to show off their progress in composition and penmanship. In 1842 William Egley tried to make a commercial success of Christmas cards but failed to arouse any interest. In 1847, Sir Henry Cole commissioned J.C. Horsely to make a card. There was little interest at first, but by 1868, it was a common practice in all of England. Louis Prange began the public sale of Christmas card in America in 1875.
