ATV History.
The ATV (all terrain vehicles) was originally developed in Japan to get to and from mountainous and farming regions during the spring and rainy seasons. Originally ATV’s all had 3 wheels and were used mostly for farming, ranching, and some police work. The ATV market in the US began when it was introduced in the 1970’s as a recreational vehicle, though farmers used it to help around their farms and ranches. The maneuverability of the ATV made it ideal to get to areas where trucks and tractors couldn’t get to, while offering enough power to bring supplies or work tools with you.

The popularity of ATV’s exploded in the mid 1980’s when the 4 wheel ATV was introduced. The 4 wheeler became very popular as a recreational vehicle for hunters, fisherman, and campers. The ATV’s ability to maneuver around trees in back wood and muddy areas made them ideal to get to places that could not be reached except by walking. The ATV’s could also carry camping and hunting gear for longer stays in the woods.

ATV’s are also used in races for entertainment. The original 3 wheel ATV’s competed in races as far back as 1981. It would race in open competitions against 2 wheel and 4 wheel competitors and had great success. While the motorcycles normally could beat the 3 wheelers, it could beat all of the 4 wheeled competitors. Modern ATV races are done in arenas and open air tracks all over the United States and other countries.
