History of the Dachshund:
A Dachshund is a short-legged member of the hound family. The name literally means “badger dog’ in German, because the dogs were bred to sniff out, pursue and hunt badgers, which is why today’s dachshunds are eternal ‘excavators’. With their long bodies and short legs, they’re more commonly referred to in the United States as wiener or sausage dogs, and in Germany they’re known as the “Dackel” or “Teckel”. Two types of Dachshunds are recognized, the standard and the miniature, with a third group, called informally ‘tweenies’ arising in the 1990’s. The breed types are distinguished only by weight and height, with full-grown dachshunds weighing between 16-28 pounds and the miniatures weighing less than 11 pounds. (The ‘tweenies’ are obviously in the middle of these two classes, ranging from 10-15lbs.) The coats range in color, with the dominant and often recognized ‘black and tan’, with crčme, blue, brown, reds and ‘boar’ included. They are loyal, energetic and sometimes stubborn, clever dogs that love to chase small animals and play.Select this link to view our Animal Ornaments Christmas.

History of the Bearded Collie:
Their admirers affectionately know bearded collies as “Beardies”. They’re descended from a polish sheepdog that was traded in Scotland to a farmer in the 1500’s, and bred with local herding dogs to produce the breed. They range in color from black, brown, blue or fawn with white markings. They have a soft undercoat with a coarse shaggy outer coat, which tends to lighten up as they get reach adulthood. They require regular maintenance, and a good frequent brushing to keep their coat well groomed. Ideal height is 20-22 inches and they weigh between 40-60 pounds. As a smaller “cousin” to the English sheepdog, they’re considered medium-sized. Hardy working dogs, they’re upbeat, playful and make good family pets, as they’re neither aggressive nor shy. They’re noisy barkers, but not watchdogs. They’re also incredibly active dogs, requiring plenty of outdoor time and exercise, and don’t make good apartment pets.

History of the Boxer.
According to the 2006 AKC statistics, the Boxer is the 7th most popular breed in the US and they’ve held that ranking since 2002. They have German origins, a combination between the German Bullenbeisser (now extinct) and the English bulldog. The Boxer is a shorthaired, medium sized, stocky, muscular dog, with a wide skull, deep, strong chest and a square-jawed muzzle, with large eyes. They range in size between 23-25 inches and weigh between 55-70 pounds. Their coats are generally fawn or brindle, with a white underbelly. They’re playful, energetic, make good guard dogs and tend to be great with children. They’re also headstrong, have a longer than average ‘puppyhood’ and are called the ‘Peter Pan’ of dogs, reaching full maturity at about 2-3 years of age.
