History of the Chihuahua:
The Chihuahua is a well-known, small breed dog, whose more recent familiarity is the by-product of celebrities such as Paris Hilton, commercials such as the “Taco Bell dog” and has earned the breed the nickname ‘accessory dog’. However, the diminutive pet has ancient ancestry, dating back to Aztec civilization, where the dog was revered. Although there are a few theories as to the origins of this tiny dog ranging from Spanish roots to Chinese miniature breeding, its reputation for being spunky, fiercely loyal and full of personality has remained in the forefront. AKC ratings require that the Chihuahua weigh no more than six pounds and some are so tiny (teacup) that they can stand in the palm of your hand! They come in a variety of colors, and in both short and long-haired breed types. The Chihuahua tends to find a ‘favorite’ in the family, and don’t usually work well for families with small children, as they’re somewhat jealous and tend to bite when frightened. History of Dogs:
The most widely accepted view pertaining to the origin of the dog is that they evolved from a squirrel-like creature, similar to the one responsible for animals such as the bear and skunk. It is widely believed that thousands of years ago dogs and humans saw each other as fellow hunters, until at some point in time they bonded. Unlike other canine species akin to the wolf, over time man learned how to domesticate dogs as pets and companions. Historians seem to have varying opinions on when this took place. Research has shown that in many great empires and nations throughout the world, dogs were symbolic pets for their owners. Some were gifts with emblematic meaning, while others may have been for show or sport. Whatever the origin, the bond between man and dog has become so strong that now humans and dogs are practically inseparable. It seems as though dogs, after years of being fed and taken care of by humans, have come to respect them as their masters. Likewise, after years of companionship from their beloved dogs, humans have come to respect them in return. It is very unlikely that this bond will ever be broken. Different societies do have different views on whether or not dogs make good pets, even to this day, although the vast majority of the population of the modern world accepts dogs as pets. Dog Competitions:
Dog shows, in general, originated in the mid-1800’s in the UK by a group of hunters in Newcastle. A subsequent show in Birmingham, however, was the show that would continue for years, and still takes place annually today. The earliest dog show in America, the Westminster, took place approximately 20 years later at the Westminster Hotel in New York City. The only sporting event to have outlived the Westminster, in American history, is the Kentucky Derby, by two years. The world’s largest dog show is known as Crufts. It is named after the founder of the show, Charles Cruft, who set the show up as an entrepreneur. He earned a great deal of money from his shows until his death, when his wife took over. Not long after she took it over, however, she sold the show to the Kennel Club. She did this partly because she felt it was too much of a burden for her, but mainly because she wanted the show to go on, and it does! To this day it is still growing in popularity!
