Our Price: $10.76

These 2.5 inch Christmas dog puppies are brown with black eyes and folds of skin gathering around their legs. The dog breed Christmas ornament is sitting attentively looking slightly to the right. These pensive pups hang by a gold lame cord or they can stand on a level surface. The Christmas dog ornament comes with a pewter pet medal for the collar of your pet.

History of the Dachshund:
A Dachshund is a short-legged member of the hound family. The name literally means “badger dog’ in German, because the dogs were bred to sniff out, pursue and hunt badgers, which is why today’s dachshunds are eternal ‘excavators’. With their long bodies and short legs, they’re more commonly referred to in the United States as wiener or sausage dogs, and in Germany they’re known as the “Dackel” or “Teckel”. Two types of Dachshunds are recognized, the standard and the miniature, with a third group, called informally ‘tweenies’ arising in the 1990’s. The breed types are distinguished only by weight and height, with full-grown dachshunds weighing between 16-28 pounds and the miniatures weighing less than 11 pounds. (The ‘tweenies’ are obviously in the middle of these two classes, ranging from 10-15lbs.) The coats range in color, with the dominant and often recognized ‘black and tan’, with crčme, blue, brown, reds and ‘boar’ included. They are loyal, energetic and sometimes stubborn, clever dogs that love to chase small animals and play. Select this link to view our dog ornaments.

The Dogs Coat:
Dogs can have one or two coats, depending on the breed. The dogs with two coats commonly shed their undercoats once or twice a year. Research is still being conducted on which genes are involved with the coloration of a dog’s coat, but some interesting findings are still being made. As with humans, a mutation of a single gene could be the cause for albino dogs. It should be noted, however, that the appearance of a solid white coat on your dog does not mean it is albino. Colored eyes and a black nose are indicators of a non-albino dog. Likewise, if you look closely at the individual hairs on your dog, and see a hint of reddish, then your dog is actually said to be ‘cream colored’ and does in fact have color pigmentation. Whether a mutation of a single gene is causing the lack of pigmentation, or whether it is a combination of mutated genes, located in close proximity to each other on the DNA strand, is still up to geneticists to determine. Dog Competitions:
Dog shows, in general, originated in the mid-1800’s in the UK by a group of hunters in Newcastle. A subsequent show in Birmingham, however, was the show that would continue for years, and still takes place annually today. The earliest dog show in America, the Westminster, took place approximately 20 years later at the Westminster Hotel in New York City. The only sporting event to have outlived the Westminster, in American history, is the Kentucky Derby, by two years. The world’s largest dog show is known as Crufts. It is named after the founder of the show, Charles Cruft, who set the show up as an entrepreneur. He earned a great deal of money from his shows until his death, when his wife took over. Not long after she took it over, however, she sold the show to the Kennel Club. She did this partly because she felt it was too much of a burden for her, but mainly because she wanted the show to go on, and it does! To this day it is still growing in popularity!
