Ginger reached Europe in the 11th century when it was brought back by those who traded with the Middle East. The attractions of ginger were quickly recognized: it could be used medicinally, to treat flatulence, hangovers, and stomach disorders, as a preservative, to flavor food, and the ginger root was soon traded at fairs across the continent. The center of the medieval ginger trade was Nuremburg, which became famous for its Christmas gingerbread cakes and cookies baked by a special guild of Lebkuchler. At Christmastime, Christmas gingerbread was a well-loved feature of Nuremburg’s Christkindlmarket, as it is to this day.
Gingerbread can be made hard or soft, dark or light, heavily spiced or mild. It can be cut into various shapes, the most famous of which are “gingerbread men”, the invention of which, some attribute to Queen Elizabeth I of England and Christmas gingerbread houses, which Germans call Hexenhausle, or “witches’ houses,” after the home of the confectioner in “Hansel and Gretel.” Gingerbread can also be cut into shapes suitable for ornaments and hung from Christmas trees as gingerbread man ornaments. Angels are emissaries from God who play an important role in the Nativity. Gabriel begins the story by announcing the remarkable birth of two babies. One of the babies would be born to a couple thought to be too old to have children and would be named “John” and was later known as John the Baptist. The second baby would be born to a young, unwed woman named Mary who is engaged to a man named Joseph. The angel tells Mary and Joseph that the baby will be the Holy Son of Heavenly Father and will save the world and will be named “Jesus”. After the child Jesus is born the angel announces this special event to the shepherds and the Three Wise Men. When Herod tries to have the child killed, an angel warns the little family to flee to Egypt and tells them when it is finally safe to return.
Angels have been used as symbols of Christmas in figurines, ornaments, tree toppers, Christmas cards and even Christmas cookies. One of the most popular uses for angels at Christmas is to hang them above your nativity stable. Another popular usage of angels at Christmas is in music. There are countless songs from all over the world depicting angels heralding the birth of the Christ Child. Some of these songs include; from France “Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes”, which has been translated into English as “Angels From The Realms of Glory.” From Moravia “Angels and Shepherds.” From England, “Angels We Have Heard on High“, “Hark The Herald Angels Sing“, and “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night.” From America, “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear.” Select this link to view our Unique Angel Gifts.
