The White Pine.
The white pine is the most important of all pines. It grows in Canada and many parts of the United States. Many forests of white pine can be found in the northeast from Nova Scotia to Manitoba, southward through New England, along the Alleghenies and westward to Minnesota. The white pine is beautiful and fast growing. Its timber is supposed to have the greatest value. Its needles or leaves grow in groups of five and are a soft bluish green color. The bark of the white pine is very smooth, unlike that of most other pines.
In the forest where trees are crowded, the white pine grows in a tall, straight column. The lower branches are lost when the tree is young. The remaining branches are near the top of the tree. In open spaces where there is a great deal of room the lower branches remain on the tree and the top of the tree spreads out. Sometimes the trunk itself divides into two or more limbs. This is an interesting example of how environment can shape the appearance of a species in the plant world.
The white pine has many uses. The wood is used for home furnishings and other inside uses .It is a soft wood with a straight grain, which makes it easy to work. It can also be easily painted or varnished. The wood of the white pine is also used to make masts and spars of vessels, furniture and shingles. The bark of the tree gives a sap that is used in cough mixtures.
In England and Europe the white pine is used entirely as an ornamental tree. It is known there as Weymouth pine, after the Englishman who discovered it .In the United States the tree is so popular that Maine uses the cone and tassel of the tree as the state emblem.

Legends of St. Nicholas.
St. Nicholas and the Three Maidens.
One of the oldest and most popular of the legends of St. Nicholas tells how young Nicholas saved three sisters. The sisters had ass reached the age at which young women marry. Unfortunately, their father could not provide any of them with a dowry. When Nicholas found out he took a small bag of gold to the family’s house after it got dark and threw it in an open window. Some say he threw it down the chimney. The father gratefully seized the gold and used it to pay for the dowry of the eldest girl. Nicholas provided dowries for the second and third daughters I the same fashion. The third time Nicholas pulled this trick the girl’s father was waiting for him. When the bag of gold came flying into the house he ran outside, discovered Nicholas and thanked him for his generosity. Nicholas asked the man not to tell others of his good deed.
Some believe this legend gave rise to several Christmas season customs, including the tradition whereby St. Nicholas distributes gifts on his feast day. In addition, the custom of putting out shoes or hanging stockings by the fireplace to receive the saint’s and later Santa’s, gifts might also have been inspired by this story. This legend achieved such widespread fame and popularity that the three bags of gold became an emblem of the saint. Sometimes artists simplified their images of the saint by depicting the bags of gold as three gold balls.

Santa of the Year Award.
In 1995 the Santa Claus of Greenland Foundation instituted the Santa of the Year Award to be given each Christmas “to an individual person, who is internationally recognized for humanistic views and deeds and who is committed to furthering awareness of the need for improvements in the welfare of children throughout the world.” That year President Nelson Mandela of South Africa was given the award by the premier of Greenland, along with $100,000 to be used for children’s charities.
