History of the Modern American Santa Claus
Born in the United States of mixed ethnic and religious heritage, Santa Claus embodies the American ideal of the nation as a great melting pot of cultural identities. Santa Claus became an important folk figure in the second half of the nineteenth century, about the time when Americans were beginning to celebrate Christmas in large numbers. Santa Claus bears a good deal of resemblance to his closest relative, the old European gift bringer St. Nicholas. Indeed “St. Nick” serves as one of Santa’s nicknames.
Many popular songs tell of his North Pole and Christmas Eve activities. Nearly every American child can tell you that Santa is a plump, old man with a white beard who wears a baggy red suit and cap trimmed with white fur. Many send letters to his North Pole workshop describing the gifts they would like to receive for Christmas. They eagerly await Christmas Eve, when he loads his sled with toys for good girls and boys and flies around the world, sliding down chimneys to place the presents under decorated Christmas trees. As if to confirm this Christmas fairy tale, men in Santa suits regularly appear on street corners, at office parties, and in department and toy stores around Christmas time. Animals in Christmas pageants:
Animals are constantly alluded to in Christmas pageants. Here are some of their tales:

  • Bees hummed a Christmas Carol.
  • Beetle because of its size, it was only noticed by Jesus. When touched it became a glow worm, its light would guide travelers.
  • Cat it appeared but disdained to join the kneeling beasts and only mumbled in recognition. Amused at its independence. Mary blessed it, saying that it would always live at man’s hearth but never be mans servant.
  • Camels have long represented religious traditions.
  • Cow donated his fresh hay to Mary for the Baby’s bed, and warmed the Child with his breath.
  • Doves cooed Jesus to sleep.
  • Nightingale this bird had never sung before that night, but the choir of angels roused ti and the bird caroled with them.
  • Owl did not rouse itself to join its fellow animals, and was condemned to perpetual penance, hiding by day and by night crying “Who will guide me to the new born? Who? Who?
  • Robin fanned the fire in the cave at Bethlehem and kept it burning throughout the night. It’s red breast, singed by the flames, became its mark of generosity.
  • Rooster crowed all night.
  • Sheep gave Mary the wool to weave a soft blanket.
  • Stork plucked its own feathers to soften the Infant’s bed and so remained the patron of babies ever after.
All farm animals show their adoration on Christmas Eve by falling on their knee’s at midnight. Certain animals are given the gift of speech for one hour to announce the birth of Christ, but it is bad luck for the humans who hear those words.
