TheTradition of Garland: The origin of garland making is lost in history. Flower garlands occur in many different cultures. Garlands were often made in Europe during the Middle Ages for festive occasions, and were part of many religious ceremonies. Often they were worn on the body, or made into crowns. Flower garlands also served the purpose of scenting rooms and areas.
Tinsel was invented in 1610, and was soon used to decorate trees. Tinsel garland was originally made from actual silver. It was beautiful, but prone to tarnishing of course. Attempts were made to use other metals, but with little real success. In the middle of 20th century, real silver tinsel garland gave way to metallic plastic and PVC. Garland use guide: Average doorway is 83 inches from the top of the trim molding to the floor and 41 inches across, including the trim molding. Two 9 foot strands of garland will completely cover a standard, single, doorway from the floor, across the top and to the floor on the other side.
For a window that is 51 inches across and 51 inches tall, including the trim molding, a 9 foot strand of garland will stretch straight across the top and hang about halfway down each side.

The people of northern Europe and the Romans decorated their homes with evergreen boughs during their winter festivals. Sprigs of holly were exchanged as tokens of good will for the coming new year. The Kissing Bough, or Christmas Kissing Ball, originated in Britain in the eighteenth century. They consisted of hoops overlaid with evergreen garlands. The whole thing would be decorated with streamers, apples, nuts, oranges, lighted candles, three small dolls representing the Holy Family and a sprig of mistletoe, which would hang from the center. The Kissing Bough would be hung from the ceiling at conspicuous points. This tradition encouraged holiday romance, especially during the Victorian era. Ladies who were caught under the bough allowed themselves to be kissed by a gentleman and for each kiss bestowed, the gentleman plucked one berry and gave it to the lady, when no berries remained, the Kissing Bough lost its romantic spell.

Yule Straw: In Norway, Sweden and Finland decorations made out of straw appear in homes and shops during the Christmas season. Some believe these ornaments represent the old custom of slee
