In the early 1800’s Santa Claus as we know him today evolved from the European images of Saint Nikolaus through letters written in New York. In 1809 Washington Irving wrote a satire on Dutch life entitled Diedrich Knickerbocker’s History of New York that was ultimately responsible for creating a mythical association between Saint Nikolaus and the person who we know today as Santa Claus. Irving describes St. Nikolaus (later to become Santa Claus) to be riding a horse and wagon that flew across the skies to bring good children their gifts. Dressed in red fur and smoking a pipe he would descend down the chimney to distribute his gifts to the children.

The earliest written account of Saint Nikolaus was on December 23, 1773 that honored the saint “otherwise called St. a Claus.” In the following year George Pintard published a pamphlet illustrating pictures of the saint dressed in a bishops robe. Stockings stuffed with presents were hanging by the fireplace. Stocking filled with treats were for the good children and stocking filled with switches were for the bad ones. In 1821 a book entitled The Children’s Friend a poem was written that describes elements that helped develop Santa Claus. Santa’s connection with the Northern winters which is known as the North Pole today. Santa’s arrival with his reindeer and sleigh on Christmas Eve to give gifts to the good children and switches to the not so good one’s. These early publications may have influenced the poem first published anonymously in the Troy Sentinel on December 23, 1823. Later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore. This classic poem known as The Night Before Christmas furthered the image of Santa Claus as we know him today. The old tradition of giving switches has almost vanished even though today the reference by many parents wishing for good behavior during the Christmas holiday season still refer to being good so Santa will bring presents. Santa Claus as we know him today is a more gentle person than his European predecessor’s.
