The Dogs Senses:
As far as the sense of smell and hearing go, dogs have abilities far beyond that of man. Some can smell the faintest of an odor from a person on an object and others can catch scents that are days old. It is for these reasons that dogs are naturally capable of helping hunters and law enforcement officials. Both senses can help hunters locate both animals and kills in much less time than a human could expect to alone. Likewise these senses come in handy for law enforcement officials who are tracking predators or attempting to locate objects or people. Their vision, however, is not as good as that of humans as they have a hard time distinguishing colors. Herding dogs:
Historically, herding dogs did just that, kept herds of livestock together. To be considered part of the AKC group named ‘herding dogs’, the dog is either part of a breed that’s been bred over generations as a herding or ‘working’ animal, or is trained in herding. They are considered a sub-group under the working dogs category. Herding dogs are also bred to protect the herd from predators, and are used typically to herd cattle, sheep, reindeer, and to a lesser degree, poultry. Some animals work well with any type of livestock, while others are bred over time to fill a specific job. For example, shorter breeds such as Corgis work well with cattle because they’re able to avoid being kicked by their ‘charges’. Typical examples of herding dogs include Collies, Welsh corgis, Shepherds (i.e. Australian, English, Dutch, German etc.) Koolies, various Sheepdog breeds, and many others. The Dogs Coat:
Dogs can have one or two coats, depending on the breed. The dogs with two coats commonly shed their undercoats once or twice a year. Research is still being conducted on which genes are involved with the coloration of a dog’s coat, but some interesting findings are still being made. As with humans, a mutation of a single gene could be the cause for albino dogs. It should be noted, however, that the appearance of a solid white coat on your dog does not mean it is albino. Colored eyes and a black nose are indicators of a non-albino dog. Likewise, if you look closely at the individual hairs on your dog, and see a hint of reddish, then your dog is actually said to be ‘cream colored’ and does in fact have color pigmentation. Whether a mutation of a single gene is causing the lack of pigmentation, or whether it is a combination of mutated genes, located in close proximity to each other on the DNA strand, is still up to geneticists to determine.

Terriers:
Terriers are a group of breeds that were originally bred for hunting small game like the fox, otter and badger and pests such as rats and mice. The name originates from the Middle French terrier, and before that, the Latin “terra”, meaning earth. These animals are usually small, with the largest breed being the Airedale Terrier, and have spunky, somewhat energetic personalities. Terrier breeds primarily originated in Britain. Terrier types include working, show and toy.
