History of the Christmas Wreath.
No one knows the exact history of the custom of displaying a wreath at Christmas time. It is speculated that the front door wreath evolved out of the older, German Advent Wreath.
The English word wreath comes from the old Anglo Saxon verb ‘writhan,’ meaning ‘to writhe’ or ‘to twist.’ Christmas wreaths are made by bending or twisting branches of greenery into a circular shape.
Wreaths have served as powerful symbols for many years. In ancient Greece and Rome wreaths of greenery worn as crowns sat on the brows of those believed to have won divine favor. Thus, wreaths adorned the heads of sacrificial animals, winners of athletic and artistic competitions, participants in religious festivals and kings. The type of greenery used to make the wreath also sent a message Winners of athletic and literary contests wore wreaths of laurel. Wreaths of ivy circled the brows of those honoring the wine god, Dionysus or Bacchus. Those whose achievements brought about military victories or peace wore wreaths of olive.
In the Bible wreaths are associated with joy, triumph and honor. As Christianity developed its won symbolic code, it turned the laurel wreath into a sign of the attainment of salvation. In more general terms, the wreath represents the same thing as the circle, which is often interpreted as a symbol of eternity.

Meaning of Evergreens.
Evergreens represent all the plants that withstood the death of winter and so were charged with enchanted powers which signified the strength of life. Evergreens were symbols of eternal life and thought to bring good luck against evil spirits. Anciently evergreens were held as protectors and were brought inside one home to keep the evil of darkness at bay. This was during a time of very long cold winters when most people had no heat and so plants became man’s hope that the sun would return.
The work Evergreen comes from two Olde English terms, ‘aefre’ meaning ‘always’ and ‘growan’ meaning ‘to grow.’

Angels According to many religions an angel is a spiritual being created by God. The word angel comes from a Greek word meaning messenger or one who is sent. According to religious tradition, angels live in heaven and act as God’s servants and as messengers between God and human beings. They also serve as guardians of individuals and nations. Angels traditionally are pictured as having a human body and wings. Poets and artists have portrayed angels as symbols of innocence or virtue.
In some religions, legends tell of bright, powerful spirits that appear in dreams and visions and protect people or tribes. In Hinduism and Buddhism, many major gods are accompanied by a band or court of spiritual beings.
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam developed the most elaborate doctrines about angels. These religions recognize an order of beings in which angels rank above human beings but under God. God is all powerful and the human is sometimes portrayed as in Gods image.
The concept of angels with a human body and wings began in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament, and in Christianity. Later tradition refers to many archangels, angels of high rank, including Saint Michael.
Christian doctrine regarding angels reached full development during a AD 1100’s and 1200’s especially in the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas believed angels were necessary to fill the gap between God and human beings. He taught that countless numbers of angels existed and that they were immortal. According to Aquinas, angels knew everything except what depended on human choice and what was known only to God.
