The Glass Bird Ornament

Glassblowers would often carefully capture wild birds in autumn to keep in cages in their workshops and to shelter them during the winter months. The sound of the gas flame from the Bunsen burners used to make glass ornaments would prompt the birds to sing throughout the day, thereby entertaining the entire family. Because bird ornaments were difficult to create, few glassblowing families in Germany specialized in the making of these special pieces. Silent Night Chapel
In 1816, the world’s most beloved Christmas song, “Stille Nacht” or “Silent Night” was written by Father Joseph Mohr. Franz Gruber, Mohr’s friend, composed the music. “Stille Nacht” was sung, in German, for the very first time on Christmas Eve in 1818 in the St. Nikolaus Church, Oberndorf by Salzburg, Austria.
The organ was broken, so the song was accompanied by guitar. In 1907, St. Niklous Church was damaged in a flood and torn down.
In memory of this famous landmark and “Stille Nacht”, the Austrian people built the “Silent Night Chapel” on the altar site of the original St. Nikolaus church.
