Banns of Marriage.
The banns of marriage are a public announcement of the fact that a man and a woman intend to be married. This is usually read or published in church. The custom of marriage banns was begun in medieval times to help prevent hasty or unsuitable unions between members of the congregation. Reading them in public also gave people an opportunity to object to the marriage, if any good reason were known.
The Synod of Westminster, held in 1200, ordered that banns be published three times, on three successive Sundays or holy days. The Fourth Lateran Council upheld this requirement. The custom is still practiced in the Roman Catholic, Anglican and certain other churches.
Wedding Anniversary.
The yearly anniversary of the day two persons were married is often an occasion for celebration and gift giving. The peoples of many lands celebrate wedding anniversaries according to their own customs and traditions. In the United States, each anniversary gradually came to have a name of its own. These names were based on the gifts persons gave to mark the end of that particular year of married life. Today wedding anniversaries are often celebrated without regard for the name of gift that was once thought appropriate. Many persons still cling to the old custom of giving a certain type of gift of each anniversary.

What is a Ring?
A ring is a small, round or nearly round, band. It is generally worn on the finger. Most rings are made of gold or other precious metals, but other materials such as ivory or plastics are also used. Rings may be plain, engraved and decorated or set with stones. The most popular precious stone used in ring settings is the diamond. The amethyst, turquoise, topaz, pearl, emerald, ruby and sapphire are also widely used. A ring, which contains a seal, is called a signet ring. Personal initials are often used to form the decoration of a ring.
The custom of wearing rings is probably as old as man. The earliest rings known are those found in the tombs of ancient Egypt. Rings are signs of authority, love and marriage, as well as just personal ornaments.
Primitive people have worn rings in the nose or ear. Rings still adorn noses, ears, arms, ankles and toes. Toe rings are sometimes worn in the Orient. In other countries it has long been the custom to wear rings only on the fingers or in the ears. Earrings are very popular. Until the 1300’s rings were commonly worn on the thumb.
