Birdbaths.
Birdbaths hold water, which can be the cheapest and most effective way to attract birds. They get the most business when the birdfeeder is also present. Birds, like humans, like to drink when they eat. Sometimes water is hard for birds to find and is as important to birds as food. There are some birds that will ignore all your efforts to entice them to your birdfeeder but they will quickly visit a birdbath to drink and bathe.
Most birds prefer to drink and bathe in very shallow water. The majority of garden birds prefer the water to be 2.5 inches deep. Even the larger birds like Jays are suspicious of water more than four or five inches deep. All prefer a vessel that slopes to the deepest point and the edges should be rough so they can easily keep their footing.
Pedestal type of birdbaths are recommended wherever there are cats because birds with wet feathers fly poorly and frequently become so engrossed in their bathing activities that they are not as alert. The bath should be placed in an open area so the birds are less likely to be caught by surprise and place by trees or sturdy bushes nearby where the birds can perch and preen after bathing.
How often a birdbath must be cleaned depends on what birds use it and where its placed. Placing the birdbath a little distance from a birdfeeder or any over hanging branches so it will stay cleaner. That is where most people place them. Check out our selection of Holy Cross and Iron Cross decorations of your home or garden.

Birdfeeder Location Tips.
When deciding on a location for your new birdfeeder, there are several things to consider. First of all, you want to be able to see the birds from indoors. The garden feeders should be in a protected location and near cover for the birds but also easy for you to reach for restocking the bird seed. In areas that receive heavy snowfall there are other considerations as well. Your feeder can be damaged if your feeder is too close to an area where the snow plow will travel. The piles of snow may make the feeder accessible to animals you do not intend to feed or animals that can harm the birds, such as cats and squirrels. Check out our selection of Yard Garden Decor.

Tips To Deter Cats and Squirrels:

  • Keep feeders at least eight feet from trees, fences or buildings from which squirrels can jump to their dinner.
  • Keep free standing feeders on pipe, this will discourage cats from climbing.
  • Grease wooden posts or sheathe them in metal.
  • To prevent creatures from climbing up, mount metal cones underneath feeders.
  • If you have a trolley feeder on a clothesline, put lengths of derelict plastic hose over the rope on either side of the feeder so squirrels feet can not get a good grip.
  • If you also enjoy feeding squirrels, try putting their food in a separate area. Select to view our complete selection of Home Decor Gifts.
