History of X Games Skateboarding:
Nobody seems to know exactly who invented the idea of skateboarding, but it is widely accepted that it started in the 50’s as a surfing alternative. The early years of skateboarding saw skateboarders who resembled dancers and ice skaters or slalom skiers more than they did the extreme, adrenaline-craved, X Games Skateboarding gurus of today. Suffering a nose-dive in the mid 60’s and again at the end of the 70’s, skateboarding of today really came to light, in the public’s eye, in the mid 80’s, by a group known as the Bones Brigade. Included in the Bones Brigade were such prominent skateboarders as Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, Stacy Peralta, Kevin Staab, and of course one of our favorites, Tony Hawk!
The 90’s saw yet another dip in the popularity of the sport, but the X Games, beginning in 1995, and the classification of X Sports, in 1997, helped bring skateboarding back into the American mainstream; where it has remained since. Where skateboarding will go from here is only speculation, but there is little chance that it will merely fade away!
History of the X Games:
Though the first ‘Extreme Games’ took place in 1995, the concept was thought of in 1993, when ESPN put a team together to figure out how to compile a group of athletes devoted to sports that could only be considered ‘Extreme.’ The first Extreme Games took place in Rhode Island and it was so successful that it was decided the following year there would be an Extreme Games II. Before the next games, however, the name was officially changed to X Games, to help increase marketing opportunities and make translation simpler. In 1997 the first Winter X Games were held on Big Bear Mountain in California. The Winter X Games I were the first X Games to be televised. The years following would only show record increases in popularity and competition! Winter Games became so big they were eventually hosted in Aspen, among other cities, and both the Summer and Winter Games became so popular that preliminary and qualifier events began to pop up. In 2001 the first Action Sports and Music Awards were held, thereby solidifying the future of the X Games … At least for now! We can only hope the X Games will live on!
