A varsity letter is an award earned in the United States by regular participation or excellence in a school sport. Traditionally, a varsity letter signifies that its winner was a stand-out varsity athlete. Winners would wear a specially awarded letter-shaped badge on their clothing. In some institutions, the practice of awarding letters has now spread beyond the realm of strictly athletic endeavors to other activities, such as quizbowl or student publications and may also honor regular participation, reliability or sportsmanship. History of Athletics.
Athletic sports during school years are divided into stages. Fifth and sixth grade students are taught important basic movements such as running, jumping, throwing and climbing. Athletic test are common the test is a form of athletics in which a player competes against his own record only or against the average record for boys or girls of the same age and weight. The tests lead into track and field contest and swimming meets. The junior high school student begins to take part in team games such as baseball, basketball and football. He should learn to know the game in general rather than its fine points. A good prictice is to rotate the players into various positions on the team. This way each player can play all positions and find out what he can do best. The student then has a good general knowledge of the game when he enters senior high school. In high school he may be selected as a member of one of the school teams.
