Creating Athletic Standards.
Early sports clubs followed a set pattern of practice and had no medical supervision of players. They followed very loose stadards. Faculty and conference control of sports has done much to set up valuable standards for the sports program. The faculites have made sports a part of the general program of promoting school spirit. They have also used sports to teach sportsmanship. Schools have shown increasing consideration for the welfare of the players, who now are given medical examinations, have protective equipment and are trained under supervision. Formerly, coaches were usualy volunteers. Thday they are graduates of a course in physical education with a full inderstanding of how to treat growing bodies and how to conduct sports on a healthful basis. Athletics for All.
Early sports programs were limited to school teams which only the trained athletes played. Educators came to realize that these teams did not serve theneeds of the student body as a whole. As a result intramural athletics came into being. At two universities, the University of Michigan and Ohio State University, itramural sports programs began as early as 1913. In the 1920’s and 30’s intramurals became an important part of every school program.
From these programs interest in sports has spread out to all people. Each sport now has a national association to promote interest in it. Crowds at baseball, football, basketball events are quickly out growing the arenas built to hold them. The numbers of spectators who want to take part in sports is growing also. The national expenditure for sports is great.
Communities are realizing their responsibility in encouragig sports by building playgrounds, playing fields and gymnasiums. The state and national governments are also doing much to help sportsmen. The Federal Government in setting up national parks and forest has not only preserved scenic beauty but has greaty added to the opportunities of the sports enthusiast for summer and winte soprts, as well as hiking, sightseeing and relaxation. How the Earth’s Gravity Affects Sports.
- The earth’s rotation has an effect on a thrown object. Ashot put thrown to the east will be shorter than on thrown to the west, because of the effect of the earth’s rotation.
- The force of gravity is weaker at the equator than in northern latitudes.
- the force of gravity is weaker on a mountain than at sea level.
- A javelin thrower competing in southern latitudes would beat his northern record by a foot or more, because of the smaller effect of gravity.
- A broad jumper would leap 3/8 of an inch farther in Texas than he would in Massachusetts. Check out our Nutcracker Coach.
