Straw Hats.
Straw hats are also made on molds. Usually, the straw is braided and the braids sewed together into a hat. Straw hats are stiffened with a sticky substance called sizing. The best straw hats are Panama hats, which are made from the fibers of the Jipijapa and Toquilla plants, which are grown in Ecuador and Colombia.
Silk Hats.
Silk hats are the tall hats which men wear for formal occasions. They are sometimes called stovepipe hats, because the crown is shaped like a stovepipe. Stiffened calico is used for the crown of the hat, and silk plush is glued over the calico framework. The framework of the brim is made of several thickneses of the stiffened calico. The plush is brushed and ironed onto the brim framework until it sticks smoothly. Then trimmings are added and the hat is ready to be worn. Sometimes silk hats are made so that the crown can be collapsed.
How Hats are Made.
- Enough fur for one hat is weighed out. Rabbit, hare, muskrat or beaver fur is used, depending on the quality of the hat and the use to be made of it.
- The forming machine has a perforated copper cone about three feet high. The cone revolves slowly and an exhaust fan sucks the loose fur down onto it.
- The cone is soaked in hot water for a short time, to shrink the fibers. At this stage, fur fibers tear easily.
- Removed from the cone the layer of felt is still more than twice the size of the finished hat. Te felt is carefully inspected before intense shrinking begins.
- Once wrapped in protective cloth the felt is folded and passed between roller. Hot water pouring over the rollers helps shrink the felt.
- Shrinkage Continues until the felt is the exact size that will be needed for the hat.
- The shrinking machines pass the felt through a set of rollers over which hat water pours. This ensures a high grade of felt and shrinks the felt to the desired size.
- The felt is stretched on a special form while it is still boiling hot from the rollers. A spray of cold water, cools the hat while it is being stretched.
- The metal brim stretcher presses the felt. The hat is then placed on a wooden block for forming. Final blocking is done with a steam iron and the brim is stretched.
- The hat is sandpapered to t smooth finish after it has been completely blocked.
- Cutting the brim is carefully done. The dimensions are different for front, back and sides. After the brim is cut it is curled, rolled, dried and pressed.
- The finished hat is ready for use after the lining, leather and outside band are sewed into place.
Hat Customs.
There are many customs connected with wearing hats. For example, women are not permitted to enter Catholic and Episcopalian churches without hats or some type of head covering. Orthodox Jewish men wear their hats at home or in the synagogue, as a sign of respect. In many countries, women must never go out on the street without a hat or some type of head covering.
