Christian Dior.
Christian Dior is considered one of the great French fashion designers of the 1900’s. In 1946, Dior founded his couture house, a company that creates fashion designs and apparel. His first collection, unveiled in 1947, was an immediate success. Dior’s 1947 designs were called the “New Look” because they differed from fashions worn during World War II.
Dior’s New Look fashions featured a luxurious use of fabric, including extravagant full skirts. The New Look also included a natural shoulder line instead of the padded shoulders of the early 1940’s. Dior recognized the importance of novelty in fashion. He emphasized the overall look by carefully selecting accessories to harmonize with each design. During the 1950’s, his designs extended into furs, hats, hosiery, jewelry and perfumes. His international fashion business became a model for the organization of later fashion empires. Dior was born in Granville, France.
Levi Strauss.
Levi Strauss, 1829-1902, was an American clothing manufacturer. He founded Levi Strauss & Co., the world’s first and largest manufacturer of denim jeans, which are sold under the brand name Levi’s.
Strauss was born in Buttenheim, Bavaria. He came to the United States in 1847 to join the dry goods business of his two brothers in New York City. In 1853, he opened a San Francisco wholesale business and began making sturdy work pants for miners. The business later became Levi Strauss & Co. A Nevada tailor, Jacob Davis, wrote to the firm in 1872 suggesting the company make work pants with rivets to reinforce the seams. Strauss hired Davis and in 1873 the company began producing riveted blue denim jeans and jackets. Gradually, the firm expanded to make other clothing in many fabrics. Today, the company is the world’s largest clothing manufacturer.
The History of Jeans.
Jeans are trousers that are usually made of denim, a heavy, coarse cotton cloth with and diagonal weave. Jeans are made in a variety of styles and colors. Men, women, boys and girls
in almost every country wear jeans. The word jeans, comes from Genes, the French word for Genoa, a port in Italy. In the Middle Ages, working men there wore sturdy cotton pants that were the forerunners of jeans
The first jeans were made in the United States during the 1850’s by Levi Strauss, an immigrant from Bavaria. Strauss arrived in California during the Gold Rush and started a business manufacturing sturdy work pants for gold miners. He used brown canvas cloth at first but later made the pants of a tough cotton fabric from Nimes, France. The word denim comes from the French phrase de Nimes, meaning from Nimes. Strauss dyed the denim a deep blue called indigo, which became the traditional color for jeans. In 1873, Strauss and a tailor named Jacob W. Davis took out a patent for trousers strengthened wit copper rivets at the pockets and other points of strain.
For decades, jeans were worn chiefly by outdoor laborers, such as farmers and cowboys. In the 1940’s, young people began to wear blue jeans for casual occasions. In the 1960’s, jeans became important to a youth movement called the counterculture. Members of the counterculture rejected the lifestyles of the middle class. They wore jeans to identify themselves with poor working people.
In the 1070’s, expensive designer jeans became a status symbol. These jeans had a label on the outside bearing the designer’s name, such as Calvin Klein or Gloria Vanderbilt.
Clothing.
Food, shelter and clothing are the three things people must have. They need and want many more things but they do not think much about other needs until these three are satisfied.
It is easy to see why food and shelter are needed. People cannot live at all without food. In most part of the world they cannot live long without shelter. But in many climates people could keep alive without clothing.
