A carol is a song of joy celebrating the great Christmas festivals of Easter, Christmas and New Years. Carols are most often sung at Christmastime. The custom of singing carols has been popular in Europe since the Middle Ages. It still forms a special feature of the Christmas season in many parts of the world. Bands of singers go about the streets for several nights before Christmas. They sing in the open air or visit hospitals and homes to cheer the sick and aged. The Twelve Days of Christmas.
Depending on the differing authorities and sources, the twelve days of Christmas are either the days from December 26 to January 6, or the days from Christmas through the eve of Epiphany, or January 5. The latter coincides more closely with the liturgical Christmas season.
Taking its name form the season “Twelve Days of Christmas” is a traditional English language carol. The date of the song’s first performance is not known, though it was used in European and Scandinavian traditions as early as the 16th century. An interesting fact about the song is that the total number of presents given is 364 with is 1 less than the number of days in a year. Check out our Other Christmas Figurines for the holidays.

The story that goes with this interpretation is that English Catholics, suffering persecution in the 16th century wrote the song with these hidden meanings.
Some variations to the song are that ‘gave to me’ is sometimes used instead of ‘sent to me’, the ‘five golden rings’ are sometimes ‘five gold rings’.
The ‘four calling birds are an Americanization of the English wording ‘four colly birds’. Colly is a dialect word meaning black and refers to the European black bird.
The last four verses are sometimes interchanged so that one version of the song may have nine pipers, ten drummers, eleven ladies, twelve lords or any other combination.
