A snowflake consists of up to 100 snow crystals clumped together. Snow crystals grow from water vapor, the evaporated form of water, in clouds. Amazingly Enough, all of the billions of snow crystals in existence have 6 sides and grow in either platelike or columnar patterns, depending on the air temperature and the amount of moisture present. Platelike snow crystals appear as flat, six-sided plates. In cold, humid air, they grow in the shape of 6 pointed stars. columnar snow crystals resemble long needles of ice. However, high humidity may cause them to become hollow columns. Some snowflakes have been known to measure 4 inches in diameter!

Snowflakes can also be made to fall into a plastic solution which coats the snowflake and hardens quickly. As the flake melts, it leaves a hollow shell, or cast, which retains the exact shape of the flake.
