Moravian Star History
The Moravian Star is also called the Advent Star or the Herrnhut Star, because for a long time the star was exclusively manufactured in Herrnhut, Germany. The Advent Star name is appropriate because the star is hung in the church beginning with the first Sunday in Advent.
It appears that this many-pointed star with internal illumination was first a product of the evening handicraft sessions of the Moravian boys’ school in Niesky, Germany about 1850. Around 1880 Pieter Verbeek, one of the alumni of the Moravian Boy’s School, began producing it commercially in his home. His son, Harry, founded the Herrnhut star factory that soon developed into a thriving business. Orders for Moravian Stars began coming in from many areas and at one time it was necessary for the Verbeeks to print the instructions for assembling the stars in four different languages! The points of the earliest stars were fastened to a central core made of metal. The father and son conceived of the idea of providing every point with lips, so that the lips could be overlapped and fastened with paper fasteners.
In Herrnhut, the making of stars continued in this way until World War I forced the closing of the workshop. Because American Moravians still wanted Christmas Stars, a group of Moravians in Winston-Salem, North Carolina took up the task of producing the stars for the many persons for whom this beloved emblem has such deep significance. The Herrnhut Star Factory is again operating and makes many different sizes and colors of the basic twenty-six point star which began some 20 miles away at Niesky. While not a large business, in terms of the number of employees, the factory produces thousands of Moravian Stars a year and remains the major producer of the paper stars.
The Moravian Star is popular in both church and home. Its use has spread to hotels, stores, schools, hospitals, community displays, or wherever it has become customary to have Christmas decorations. Today perhaps more non-Moravians are displaying this beautiful star at Christmas than are the Moravians themselves.
