History of the Beagle.
It is believed that the Beagle gets its name from either the French word for small, ‘beag,’ or the celtic word for gape throat, ‘bgueule.’ These dogs have possibly been around since as early as the 1400’s as scent hunting hounds. Although it is not clear which dogs were bred to produce the Beagle, it is clear that these dogs are excellent small game hunters who are easily able to be followed on foot. Some methods of hunting with beagles include using one Beagle to draw out the game, two Beagles to chase the game towards the hunter (drag hunting), and hunting with a pack of Beagles.
Beagles make excellent pets as they are very gentle and intelligent, however, their strong will can make them difficult to train if their master is not diligent with their training. Beagles should be socialized from the time they are puppies and it should continue throughout their life, as they are very curious animals and may be prone to overprotect without enough time to socialize with other dogs and humans. Though at a young age they require little time for walks, as they grow the amount of time needed increases. If their master is unable to be home for long periods of time it is recommended that there be other dogs around with them, otherwise they may get depressed and prone to rebellious behavior. Allowing these dogs to follow their sense of smell on walks and runs can help keep them mentally stimulated and less prone to becoming the escape artists that are well known for becoming!
The Dogs Senses.
As far as the sense of smell and hearing go, dogs have abilities far beyond that of man. Some can smell the faintest of an odor from a person on an object and others can catch scents that are days old. It is for these reasons that dogs are naturally capable of helping hunters and law enforcement officials. Both senses can help hunters locate both animals and kills in much less time than a human could expect to alone. Likewise these senses come in handy for law enforcement officials who are tracking predators or attempting to locate objects or people. Their vision, however, is not as good as that of humans as they have a hard time distinguishing colors. Due to a variance in the lens in their eye, though, they can see a little bit better in low light situations. Check out our Unique Christmas Ornaments for the holidays.
