History of the Poodle.
Although the Poodle is usually referred to as the “French” poodle, it’s believed that the Greeks originally bred it for sea sponge diving, and then later the Spanish adopted it for lobster diving. They come in different sizes, with the Standard (more than 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders), Miniature (10-15 inches) and Toy (less than 10 inches at shoulder height) groups recognized by the AKC. The poodle carries itself proudly, is extremely intelligent, and has been used in circus performances for centuries, as it’s a natural performer. The German word ‘Pudel’ means ‘one who plays in the water‘ while the French refer to it as the ‘Caniche’ or duck dog. They have a thick, curly coat, which is usually shaved in different ‘cuts’ if the dog is being shown, such as the Continental, or the English saddle cut.
