The First Noel.
The First Noel is a traditional English Christmas carol, most likely form the 16th or 17th century, but possibly from as early as the 13th century. In its current form it is of Cornish origin and was first published in “Some Ancient Christmas Carols” in 1823 and “Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern” in 1833. the melody is unusual among English folk melodies in that it consists of essentially the same musical phrase repeated three times and ends in the third of the scale. It is thought to be a corruption of an earlier melody sung in a church gallery setting. Select this link to view our Christmas Tree Skirt.

Joy to the World.
Joy to the World is one of the best known and best loved of Christmas carols. It contains a message of joy and love replacing sin and sorrow. The hymn is significant for its widespread use throughout Christian denominations and for the musical stature of the people who created it.
The scripture based words are by Isaac Watts. Wanting to write song based on the Psalms, Issac Watts wrote “Joy To The World” from Psalm 98. Select this link to view our Christmas Stocking Holders.
Many years after Watts’ death, Dr. Lowell Mason took the hymn and put it to music based on The Messiah by Frederick Handel. A contemporary of Issac Watts, Mr. Mason started composing music in Georgia where he lived and worked as a banker. When he tried to publish his first set of musical works it was rejected. Finally, the Handel and Haydon Society of Boston accepted it. Born in Massachusetts, Mason returned there where he eventually became president of the society that finally published his works. He went on to a great music career, composing over 1600 sacred works, including “Antioch” in 1848 which now takes the title of Isaac Watt’s work, “Joy To The World.” Select this link to view our Santa Claus Hats.
”Joy To The World” is universally sung as one of the most joyous songs of Christmas. Watt’s poem “Joy to the World” has also been sung to John Wyeth’s tine, “Nettleton”, to which is more commonly sung “Come thou fount of Every Blessing.” Lowell Mason’s tune remains the most popular.
