Santa’s Sleigh and Reindeer.
The popularity of Santa and his reindeer is largely due to Clement C. Moore, who put the two together in his poem, “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” This was not the first time that Santa was paired with hoofed friends. Before Moore published his poem, there had been a number of less successful books that portrayed Santa flying in a sleigh pulled by one reindeer. In Russia Father Frost arrived in the villages in a reindeer drawn sleigh. The Norse god Wodin was said to ride his horse Sleipner through the air to make sure people were behaving. In Holland St. Nicholas rides Sleipner to this day. Select this link to view our Kneeling Santa Christmas Ornaments.
Rudolph “the red nosed reindeer,” is by far the most popular of Santa’s nine reindeer. He is also the youngest. The firs eight reindeer were introduced by Moore in 1823, Rudolph did not come along until 1939, in a story by Robert L. May. Rudolph’s popularity is contributed to the Gene Autry song, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” which was released in 1949 and is still a Holiday classic. Why are Red and Green Used as Colors for Christmas?
No one really knows for sure why Red and Green are symbols for Christmas. One theory is that Green is the color of the evergreens that symbolize rebirth and new life. The holly berry seems to be responsible fro the red. The red berry that lives through winter, symbolizes like in the face of death. Hence both colors represent Christ.
