TheTradition of Garland.
The origin of garland making is lost in history. Flower garlands occur in many different cultures. Garlands were often made in Europe during the Middle Ages for festive occasions, and were part of many religious ceremonies. Often they were worn on the body, or made into crowns. Flower garlands also served the purpose of scenting rooms and common areas. Select this link to view our Wooden Gingerbread Man Christmas Garland.
Tinsel was invented in 1610, and was soon used to decorate trees. Tinsel garland was originally made from actual silver. It was beautiful, but prone to tarnishing of course. Attempts were made to use other metals, but with little real success. In the middle of 20th century, real Tinsel Garland gave way to metallic plastic and PVC. Most modern garland is flame and tarnish proof PVC. Select this link to view our Curly Silver Foil Garlands.
Adding Garlands to your live or Artificial Christmas Tree.
Adding woody Pine Garland with berries or fruit to your tree adds great contrast and texture. Also the addition of a glitzy Tinsel Garland can add color and sparkle to your tree. Add either Tinsel or Pine Garlands to your tree after you put your lights on and before you add any ornaments. For a fairly full, 7½ foot tree you will want to add two or three Pine Garlands. Depending on how wide your tree is and how much of your tree you want to cover with the Garland. Start adding the Pine Garland from the bottom of the tree and work your way up. The bottom of the tree is the fattest part and will take the most Garland. You can either wrap around the tree or use a series of swags. The method for adding Tinsel Garland is the same. The difference is that you can cut Tinsel Garland into different lengths and add them here and there as you like. You can add Ribbon in the same manner as either type of Garland and with the same effect. Select this link to view our 6 Foot Icy Berry Pine Cone Garland.
The Christmas Tree.
The Christmas tree originated in Germany in the 1800’s. For many it is the focal point of their Christmas decorations and festivities. Originally in the Old World, Europeans adorned their trees with cookies, fruits, and candles. In the 1850’s, German craftsmen perfected the art of glass blown ornaments, and soon Christmas trees shimmered with beautiful glass ornaments. Today’s modern Christmas tree holds lights and ornaments of all varieties and all colors of the spectrum while beneath it are wondrous gifts. A symbol of triumph over winter’s bitter cold, the Christmas evergreen has long inspired hope in the hearts of man. Holly Information.
Holly, with its red berries, dark glossy green leaves, and thorny tips was a symbol of life in the bleak chill of winter. The bright colors of holly are a natural symbol of rebirth and life in the winter whiteness of northern Europe. The appearance of the flaming red holly berries opened the season of feasting and good cheer. Also, in late December, German villagers would traditionally place holly around the interior of their dwellings to ward off bad winter weather and unwanted spirits. In early years, Father Christmas often decorated his hood with holly, which represented the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when he was crucified, and the red berries were symbolic of the blood he shed.
