The Tradition of Birthdays.
Birthday is the name given to the anniversary of the day we were born. It is celebrated by a party with friends and family bringing gifts for the person who’s Birthday it is. It is also customary to treat people especially well on their Birthday.
Birthday Celebrations are not universal. Some people prefer name day celebrations instead. There are some who do not celebrate either because they consider the origin of such festivals as Birthdays, Christmas and Easter to be pagan. Then there are some of us who just don’t like to be reminded that we are getting older. Select this link to view our Western Christmas Ornaments.
Christmas Bells.
In the United States we tend to associate bells both with emergencies and with such joyous occasions as weddings and Christmas celebrations. This association between bells and Christmas can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when Church officials began to use bells for worship and celebration. Medieval European bell customs, in turn, developed out of a wide array of beliefs and practices associated with bells in ancient times. Poinsettia History.
In some villages across the world, it is customary to leave a gift in the Church on Christmas Eve for the Baby Jesus. Along time ago in Mexico, a young child was very poor and did not have a gift to give. He prayed for an answer to his problem. God looked down and saw how upset this small child was and so he answered his prayer. Where the humble child knelt, a flower of vibrant color bloomed. The flower blossomed in the shape of a star with leaves of an amazing red. This flower became the child’s gift. Later it became known as the “Flower of the Nativity.” Today the flower is called Poinsettia after Dr. Joel Robert Poinsett, an American Ambassador to Mexico who introduced it to the United States during the 1800’s.
