History of Darts.
Darts is a variety of related games, in which darts are thrown at a circular target hung on a wall. Though various boards and games have been used in the past, the term 'darts' usually refers to a standardized game involving a specific board design and set of rules. As well as being a professional competitive activity, darts is a traditional pub game, commonly played by people in the United Kingdom, the first country to officially recognize darts as a sport, across the Commonwealth, the Netherlands, Ireland, the Scandinavian countries, the United States and elsewhere. Dartboards are usually made of sisal fibers or boar bristles. Low quality boards are sometimes made of coiled paper. A regulation board is 18 inches in diameter and is divided into 20 sections. Each section is lined with thin metal wire, or a thin band of sheet metal separates the sections. The numbers indicating the various scoring sections of the board are normally made of wire, especially on tournament quality boards, but may be printed directly on the board instead. The dartboard itself may have its origins in the cross section of a tree. An old name for a dartboard is a 'butt', and from this, folk etymology infers that the bottoms of wine barrels were the original dartboards, this word in fact comes from the French word butte, meaning target. Various designs of dartboards have been used, and regional variations remain in parts of Staffordshire, Manchester and Yorkshire. In particular, the Yorkshire and Perrigo Manchester boards differ from the standard board in that they have a single, inner bull and no treble ring. How are Bowling Pins Made?
Bowling pins are constructed by gluing blocks of hard rock maple wood into the vague shape, and then turning it on a lathe. After the lathe shapes the pin, it is coated with a plastic material, painted, and finally covered with a glossy finish. Because of the scarcity of suitable wood, efforts to make an all-plastic bowling pin have been undertaken for several years.
Juggling clubs are often mistaken for bowling pins due to their similar shape. The two vary greatly in construction and weight. Select this link to view our Gambling Santa Ornaments.
