Ribbon Styles.
There are three different styles of ribbon: woven-edge, cut-edge and wire-edge. Woven-edge ribbon is made with narrow fabric that has two selvedges on the sides, or woven to prevent fraying. Woven-edge ribbon can usually be washed since the edges will not fray. This style of Unique Christmas Ribbon is the most common in the textile industry.
Cut-edged ribbon is the type of ribbon most commonly used for gift wrapping. It is also referred to as craft ribbon. Cut-edged ribbon is made by taking designs and transferring them by heat and then cut to size. A stiffener is then added to the fabric so the edges do not unravel. Acetate, a thermoplastic, is used to make high quality cut-edge ribbon. The ribbon is cut by a hot knife making the edges fuse immediately.
Wire-edged ribbon is cut into thick strips and then wrapped around wire, on the edges. It can also be woven into the sides of the fabric.
