M&Ms History.
In 1941, Founder Forrest Mars, Sr. began production on a delightful chocolate treat in a hard shell called M&Ms. These candies became a special treat for the soldiers during World War II. During the war years, only the military were the only ones allowed to buy M&M Candies. M&Ms were first sold in hard cardboard tubes until they began packing them in black cellophane in 1948. In the 1950s is when they started imprinting the M on the candies. In 1954 not only were Peanut M&M Chocolate Candies introduced but also the tagline, Melts In Your Mouth, Not In Your Hand was born and the famous M&M characters made their television debut. Yellow, red and green colored peanut M&Ms came out in 1960 but the orange M&M was not introduced until 1976.In 1980 the hard shelled candies were introduced internationally to Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. They made their way up in a rocket into space in1982 and have been a part of the Shuttle missions ever since. Just a couple years later they were named the official snack food of the Olympic Games in California. In 1995, the blue M&M was added to the mix when over 10 million people voted. Just a year later the Minis were born. These candies were officially named candy of the new millennium in 1998 and then in 1999, the Crispy M&Ms made their debut. In 2004 consumers were allowed to personalize the hard shell chocolate treat with a custom print on 17 vibrant colors. In order to kick off a new campaign encouraging all Americans to create their own M&M Character on their website, a fifty-foot M&M Lady Liberty statue was revealed.
