Ribbon History.
Ribbon has been around for quite some time. Ribbon is defined as a narrow piece of fabric and can range in size from 1/8 inch to 1 foot. Ribbon was used to adorn clothing or personal belongings. Ribbon was used to embellish the plainest of things. Some ribbons were made with silver and gold thread with silk that were purchased from the Orient. Ribbons soon came to represent wealth. Sometime during the 16th century, the English Parliament tried to make ribbons exclusively for nobility.
Because of the high demand for ribbons in the 17th century, there was a manufacturing frenzy. Coventry, England and Lyons, France became the home of ribbon design. Ribbons adorned everything from bonnets, to dresses, to gloves. This period of time was known for the grandiose nature of fashion.
In the 1770s, a Dutch engine loom was produced. It could produce six types of ribbon at one time. This was especially helpful because the ribbon industry evolved from the silk trade. Those that traveled from the Orient to Europe would sell the silk to middlemen who would in turn sell it to the weavers. The development of this Dutch loom proved to be helpful. During this period of time, the wigs of high fashion were embellished with ribbons. Although ribbon was popular in Europe, the newly founded Americas did not engage in ribbon wearing.
Ribbon making suffered during the Napoleonic Wars since many skilled workers were drafted to the war. Ribbons became a popular item to smuggle because of the high demand. In 1813, the picot-edged ribbon created another ribbon boom. Ribbons are often used symbolically. The military uses ribbon as an honor.
The last ribbon boom in fashion came during the Victorian era when yards of ribbon were used to adorn clothing. Ribbon Textures.
