Ribbon Styles

Woven-edge ribbon can usually be washed since the edges won’t fray. This style of ribbon is the most common in the textile industry.
Cut-edged ribbon is the type of ribbon most commonly used for gift wrapping. It is also referred to as craft ribbon. Cut-edged ribbon is made by taking designs and transferring them by heat and then cut to size. A stiffener is then added to the fabric so the edges do not unravel. Acetate, a thermoplastic, is used to make high quality cut-edge ribbon. The ribbon is cut by a hot knife making the edges fuse immediately.
Wire-edged ribbon is cut into thick strips and then wrapped around wire, on the edges. It can also be woven into the sides of the fabric. This makes the ribbon easily manipulated, but also cannot be washed because of the wire.
