Ribbon Textures
Ribbon used for decorating fabrics is most likely made of fabric. Velvet, satin, rayon, and silk are the most common types used but cotton, polyester, and wool can also be used. Different techniques can be used on the surface to create a new appearance. There are six different broad categories of ribbon textures: grosgrain, satin, velvet, organdies, metallics and natural fibers.
Grosgrains are woven and show great detail in the weave. They are usually made of polyester, cotton or a fiber blend, and tend to be very durable. Satin is a popular choice because of the bold colors, shiny finishes and variety of surface patterns and edges. Velvet has a soft surface and can be printed, flocked or backed with satin. Organdies are made from very fine fibers and are very delicate. Because of this, they usually have metal on the edges to provide support. Metallics are made from lurex or other shiny synthetics that give them their shiny, sparkle finish. Natural fiber ribbons are made from natural fibers. They include linen, cotton tape, jute and paper ribbon.
