The pine tree has a tall, straight trunk that sometimes reaches a height above 200 feet. The shape of the tree may be round or like a pyramid. The bark is usually thin and scaly. The leaves are shaped like needles and grow on small branches that stretch out from the tree. The leaves seldom grow singly. They usually grow in groups of two to five, called clusters. At the bottom of each cluster there is a scaly covering known as a sheath which covers the leaves. In soft pine trees, this sheath falls off as soon as the leaves develop. In the pitch pines, the sheath does not fall off until the leaves are shed. Other Types of Pine Trees.
The Georgia, yellow, southern or Longleaf pine are all names for a pitch tree that is the most important of the hard pines. This tree is found in the south in the territory from East Texas to Virginia. It is a tall tree, often 100 feet high. It can always be recognized by its orange brown branches. Its cones are large and its needles may be more than a foot long. The sap of the tree gives off a material called resin. From this sticky substance turpentine is obtained. It is also used to make varnishes, medicines and many other products. The dry residue of resin is called rosin. The leaves or needles, give off oil that is much like turpentine. The leaves also give off a fiber that is used for stuffing pillows.
