The Mouse King
As the clock strikes midnight mysterious things start occurring. Clara begins shrinking as the Christmas tree grows high above her. The toys around the tree come to life while the room fills with an army of mice, lead by the powerful Mouse King. As the Nutcracker awakens, he leads his army of toy soldiers into battle against the mice. The Mouse King corners the Nutcracker and fights him one-on-one. The Nutcracker being no match for the Mouse King and with the army of toy soldiers unable to battle any longer, they are captured by the Mouse King. Clara makes a final courageous charge throwing her slipper, which strikes the Mouse King’s head. The Mouse King drops to the floor and the mice scurry away with their leader’s body.
Information on Mice.
A mouse is a small animal with soft fur, pointed nose, round black eyes, round ears and a thin tail. The word mouse is used for many kinds of rodents including small rats, hamsters, gerbils, jerboas, lemmings, voles, harvest mice, deer mice and grasshopper mice. All these animas have chisel like front teeth that are useful for gnawing. A rodent’s front teeth grow throughout their lives.
There are hundreds of kinds of mice that live in most parts of the world. They can be found in the mountains, fields, woodlands, swamps, near streams and in deserts. Probably the best known kind of mouse is the house mouse. It lives wherever people live and often builds its nest in homes, garages or barns.
House Mice.
House mice probably could be found in the homes of people who lived during ancient times. Those mice probably stole the people’s food the same as they would today. The word mouse comes from an old Sanskrit word meaning thief. Sanskrit is an ancient language of Asia, where scientists believe house mice originated. House mice spread from Asia throughout Europe. The ancestors of the house mice that now live in North and South America were brought there by English, French and Spanish ships during the 1500’s.
House mice always seem to be busy. Those that live in buildings may scamper about day or night. House mice that live in fields and forests usually come out only at night. All house mice climb well and can often be heard running between the walls of houses.
The Body of the House Mouse.
The house mouse is 2½ to 3½ inches long without the tail. The tail is the same length or a little shorter. Most house mice weigh ½ to 1 ounce. Their size and weight and the length of their tails differ among the many varieties and even among individuals of the same variety.
The fur of most house mice is soft but it may be stiff and wiry. It is grayish brown on the back and sides and yellowish white underneath. House mice raised as pets may have pure white fur, black or brown spots or other combinations of colors. The tail is covered by scaly skin.
A house mouse has a small head and a long narrow nose. These whiskers like those of a cat help the mouse feel its way in the dark. They have rounded ears and their eyes look some what like round black beads. Mice hear well but have poor sight.
Like all other rodents, mice have strong, sharp front teeth that grow throughout their lives. With these chisel like teeth, mice can gnaw holes in wood, tear packages, clothing and furniture.
