Tabby cats have distinctive markings around their eyes and chin and the classic M pattern which is represented by four lines of black fur on the forehead. There are four variations of the tabby coat pattern.
The most dominant is the ticked pattern. Cats with this pattern have rings of their tail, legs and around the neck and extending into the chest. Lines of color run over their head and blend in. The spine has broad dark bands all the way down the tip of the tail.
The most common tabby is the mackerel. They have distinct thin lines starting from the M and forming three lines that go down the spine to the tail. The tail, legs and neck are ringed.
The classic tabby has broad, bold lines with curves and circles on the shoulders and sides that create a clear large butterfly wing pattern.
The spotted tabby is rare and has large and small round or oblong spots like a wild cat, which are not arranged in lines or rows, with rings on the legs, neck and tail, which has a dark tip, and spots that look like buttons on their belly. They have lines of color from the top of the head that break into spots along the spine to the tail.
Orange or “red tabbies” have a cream background color with orange stripes that can be dark reddish orange to light orange, sometimes called butterscotch.
Cream tabbies have a pale cream background color with cream stripes that look more sandy or peach.
Silver tabbies have a white background color and white roots, with black stripes. They can also be blue silver, cream silver or red silver, the red silver is known as a cameo tabby.
