What is a Christmas Carol?
A carol is a song of joy celebrating the great Christmas festivals of Easter, Christmas and New Years. Carols are most often sung at Christmastime. The custom of singing carols has been popular in Europe since the middle Ages. It still forms a special feature of the Christmas season in many parts of the world. Bands of singers go about the streets for several nights before Christmas. They sing in the open air or visit hospitals and homes to cheer the sick and aged. Poinsettia.
In some villages across the world, it is customary to leave a gift in the church on Christmas Eve for the Baby Jesus. A long time ago in Mexico, a young child was very poor and did not have a gift to give. He prayed for an answer to his problem. God looked down and saw how upset this small child was and so he answered his prayer. Where the humble child knelt a flower of vibrant color bloomed. The flower blossomed in the shape of a star with leaves of an amazing red. This flower became the child’s gift. Later it became known as the “Flower of the Nativity.” Today the flower is called Poinsettia after Dr. Joel Robert Poinsett, and American Ambassador to Mexico who introduced it to the United States during the 1800’s. Bells.
The first bells came from China, but all ancient religions and societies used them for their ceremonies. Bells evolved from rattles into the sweet toned silver bells we have today, though the church did not use bells until the 6th century.
